Van Halen Opens Tour at KFC Yum Center
Van Halen opened their forty year reunion tour at the KFC Yum Center, in Louisville, KY to support their first album with David Lee Roth in twenty eight years, ” A Different Kind of Truth”.
Kool and The Gang warmed the packed venue playing an entertaining set from their catalogue of disco mega hits from the eighties. But this night was not about disco, fans dressed in memorabilia from the bands past tours were there to witness the rock legends return to the stage.
As the lights went on, the heavy opening chords of “You Really Got Me” rang out. From the start it was loud and clear, Van Halen was back with all the power of the past. “Running With The Devil”, followed and erased any doubt that Eddie Van Halen is still one of rock’s greatest guitarist. His powerful sound was filled with lighting fast notes and heavy chords played flawlessly. It is clear to see why he was voted eighth in Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 100 all time guitarist.
Brother and a founding member Alex Van Halen is an outstanding drummer. The bass is now handled by Eddie’s son, Wolfgang, who replaced original bassist , Michael Anthony. It was clear that father and son enjoy performing together.
One question I do have, Where the keyboards came from on “Jump”? I didn’t see the instrument on stage, if it was a recording the synch was done perfectly.
David Lee Roth can still entertain. His vocals were strong although he stayed away from his memorable screams of the past. His leg kicks are few and far between but his dancing and showmanship doesn’t miss a beat. He covers the massive stage, including runway and several risers throughout the show. He even glossed over forgetting the words to the last chorus of ” I’ll Wait” singing, “ I forgot the words bring on the chorus”
It is no secret that the Van Halen’s and Roth have had their issues through the years, it didn’t show on this night. The band seemed to be having fun and interactions between Roth,Wolfgang and Eddie Van ended in smiles and laughter. The band covered the majority of their biggest hits, sprinkled in a few early songs along with four songs from the new album. Even with “The Cradle Will Rock” and songs from the Sammy Hagar era left out. This show was a classic! Although this was their opening performance, it’s hard to imagine the band getting any tighter! They played and sang every note to perfection.
If these guys can hold on to the the energy and their health as the tour progresses it’s one show you don’t want to miss!

Taylor Swift Dazzles KFC Yum Center
Taylor Swift made up her canceled July concert with a dazzling performance at a sold out KFC Yum Center in Louisville ,Ky. It was quickly evident that she was completely forgiven, as her fans arrived early dressed in Taylor full attire. The fan based consisted of females from early teens and younger many with mothers in tow, carried signs asking to be selected for Swift’s famous T-Party after show meet and greet. The Yum Center plaza filled up before 5:30p.m. as many tried to beat the traffic jam created by the closing of the Sherman Minton Bridge. This was the first major show since it’s closing and traffic began backing up before 4 o’clock. As fans piled in the arena, the plaza was scattered with fathers who waited outside during the show for their daughters.
When the curtain came down around 8:30. Swift was greeted to a screaming audience unlike anything I have heard since The Beatles. The elaborate stage that included cut out areas for her fan club. The background included a gold stairwell and three video screens. Taylor Swift is a beautiful talented performer, she danced, played guitar and her vocals couldn’t have been better. She connects with her audience as well as anyone in the business.
This show was worth the wait and made up for the thousands of hearts that broken from the cancelation. I overheard one fan saying” I have had this ticket for 269 days and I would do it again to see Taylor.

Louisville goes Gaga over Lady Gaga and the “The Monster Ball Tour”
Saturday evening the KFC Yum Center
hosted Lady Gaga’s “The Monster Ball Tour”. The elaborate production thrilled its diverse audience who dressed for the event in everything from glam outfits to bubble wrap dresses. Many of the sold out crowd wore face paint and dressed in Gaga style for the show.
Lady Gaga played nearly two hours changing outfits and stage sets frequently throughout the performance. She interacted with her fans during and between songs expressing her opinions on diversity, sex, bullying while always encouraging them to get out of your seats and dance.
The tight photography restrictions which limited photographers to only songs six, “Fame” and seven, Love Game”. We were required to stay with our guide and not allowed to watch the first portion of the show until we finished with the photography.
I did watch the remainder of the performance, Lady Gaga has musical talent and a great cast of dancers and musicians. The stage effects and costume changes were a mix of Glam, Mardi Gras, Strip Club and Broadway production all combined.
It was a celebration party, lead by the new Pop Queen who repeatedly told her fans
” Everyone is different, you have to make the best of it and wear your mask with pride”
At least for this night, most fans did.
