Van Halen Opens Tour at KFC Yum Center

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on February 20, 2012

Van Halen Opens Tour at KFC Yum Center

Van Halen opened their forty year reunion tour  at the KFC Yum Center, in Louisville, KY to support their first album with David Lee Roth  in twenty eight years, ” A Different Kind of Truth”.

Kool and The Gang warmed the packed venue playing an entertaining set from their catalogue of disco mega hits from the eighties. But this night was  not about  disco, fans  dressed in memorabilia from the bands past tours were there to witness the rock legends return to the stage.

As the lights went on, the heavy opening chords of “You Really Got Me” rang out. From the start it was loud and clear, Van Halen was back with all the power of the past. “Running With The Devil”,  followed and erased any doubt that Eddie Van Halen is still one of rock’s greatest guitarist. His powerful sound was filled with lighting fast notes and heavy chords played flawlessly. It is clear to see why he was voted eighth in Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 100 all time guitarist.

Brother and a founding member Alex Van Halen is an outstanding drummer. The bass is now handled by Eddie’s son, Wolfgang, who replaced original bassist , Michael Anthony. It was clear that father and son enjoy performing together.

One question I do have,  Where the keyboards came from on “Jump”? I didn’t see the instrument on stage, if it was a recording the synch was done perfectly.

David Lee Roth can still entertain. His vocals were strong although he stayed away from his memorable screams of the past. His leg kicks are few and far between but his dancing and showmanship doesn’t miss a beat. He  covers the massive stage, including  runway and several risers throughout the show. He even glossed over forgetting the words to the last chorus of ” I’ll Wait” singing, “ I forgot the words bring on the chorus”

It is no secret that the Van Halen’s and Roth have had their issues through the years, it didn’t show on this night. The band seemed to be having fun and interactions between Roth,Wolfgang and Eddie Van ended in smiles and laughter. The band covered the majority of their biggest hits, sprinkled in a few early songs along with four songs from the new album. Even with  “The Cradle Will Rock” and songs from the Sammy Hagar era left out. This show was a classic! Although this was their opening performance, it’s hard to imagine the band getting any tighter!  They played and sang every note  to perfection.

If these guys can hold on to the the energy and their health as the tour progresses it’s one show you don’t want to miss!

Texas Blues Legend Johnny Winter Confirms Documentary Filming throughout 2012 with ‘Lemmy’ Filmmaker Greg Olliver

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on February 16, 2012
The definitive Johnny Winter documentary is finally in production! Filmmaker Greg Olliver, whose credits include co-directing and producing the critically acclaimed documentary ‘Lemmy’, will be shadowing the storied bluesman worldwide throughout 2012, with a theatrical release planned for 2013.
“Still one of the world’s premiere electric guitarists” (New Yorker), Johnny Winter continues to perform over 120 shows / year worldwide and was recently a guest on Letterman, profiled on NPR, and named one of Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Guitarists of All Time.  On his latest album ‘Roots’ (Megaforce), a tribute to his blues heroes, Winter “shows yet again that wailing the blues effectively demands sizzling focus and a wagonload of knowledge” (Wall Street Journal).
“I grew up in Texas listening to the blues, so making a film with Johnny is a dream come true for me,” says Olliver.  “And since there aren’t many blues icons left out there, I feel very honored to be working with him.  His is a story that needs to be told!”
A torchbearer for the blues, Johnny revived the careers of Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker by producing their Grammy-winning comeback albums.  His friend John Lennon wrote “Rock and Roll People” in his honor, and he’s performed at Woodstock and in bands with Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.   Johnny’s record deal with Columbia Records in the late 60s is considered the largest of its time.
Greg Olliver’s film ‘Lemmy’ has earned Gold status in the United States, UK and Germany, and aired on VH1 and in theaters across the US.
The Johnny Winter documentary will be filmed throughout 2012 and produced by Olliver’s company, Secret Weapon Films, with a completion goal and theatrical release planned for 2013.

WANEE IS VERY EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE A NEW ADDITION TO THE FESTIVAL!

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on February 7, 2012

Jack Cassidy and Jorma Kaukonen of Hot Tuna

WE ARE COLLABORATING WITH
ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAMER JORMA KAUKONEN AND BRINGING HIS FUR PEACE RANCH TO
THE WANEE FESTIVAL SITE IN 2012!

For the first time Wanee Music Festival will host one of the premier music workshops in the country, Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch. Wanee and Fur Peace Ranch will hold workshops during the festival and Q&A groups that will be held by Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Mickey Hart, Oteil Burbridge, Warren Haynes and other performers that will be at Wanee 2012. They will all be hosted by Rock and Roll Hall Of Famer, Jorma Kaukonen.

In 1989, Jorma and Vanessa Kaukonen conceived what Jorma calls “a ranch that grows guitar players.” Not a fantasy camp, but this would be a place where both budding and seasoned musicians could immerse themselves for several days, and emerge with renewed inspiration and tangible progress in their music. Now in its 15th year, the award winning Fur Peace Ranch will take their concept “on the road” and for the first time will be on site at the Wanee Music Festival 2012.

Mickey Hart Band to Perform at Headliners Music Hall in Louisville, KY on April 10th

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on February 7, 2012
Smithsonian Folkways Release Mickey Hart Collection, New Album in Spring

SAN FRANCISCO, CA-The Mickey Hart Band will perform at Headliners Music Hall in Louisville, KY on April 10th.Hart is donating 100% of the ticketing fees from tickets sold on MickeyHart.net to Music Therapy research.   Fresh off the road from a sold out 15 date tour in December, the Mickey Hart Band band features Tony Award winning vocalist Crystal Monee Hall, singer Tim Hockenberry, bassist Dave Schools, drummer Ian “Inx” Herman,  guitarist Gawain Matthews, percussionist Sikuru Adepoju, and keyboardist Ben Yonas.  The show will feature brand new material as well as selections of Hart’s greatest hits and Grateful Dead songs.

Hart is currently in the studio recording his new album to be released in April of 2012.  Hart recently sat down with Andrew Greene of Rolling Stone to describe the album:

“For the last two or three years I’ve been sampling light waves from the cosmos, starting 13.7 billion years ago with the Big Bang,” he says. “The signals come from radio telescopes around the world and I work closely with NASA to take the light waves and bring it into our limited spectrum of hearing. Then I add a little spice to them with some reverb and some delay. It makes for a hot little stew.”

Hart last released the Global Drum Project with Zakir Hussain, Sikiru Adepoju, and Giovanni Hidalgo in 2007, which took home the Grammy for Best Contemporary World Music Album.  Hart previously won a Grammy for Best World Music Album with Planet Drum in 1991, which also hit #1 on the Billboard World Music Chart, remaining there for 26 weeks.

Last October, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings released the ‘Mickey Hart Collection’ to preserve and further the Grateful Dead percussionist’s endeavor to cross borders and expand musical horizons.  Smithsonian Folkways has made many of Mickey Hart’s music projects available digitally (stream and download) for the first time while keeping physical versions in print as on-demand CDs. The Mickey Hart Collection begins with 25 albums drawn from ‘The World,’ a series Hart curated that incorporated his solo projects, other artists’ productions, and re-releases of out-of-print titles. Six of the twenty-five albums form the “Endangered Music Project,” a collaboration between Mickey Hart and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, which presents recordings from musical traditions at risk.

Dr. Dog releases “Be The Void” to play Headliners 3-2-12

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on February 6, 2012

DR DOG

Dr. Dog returns with the stellar new album, Be The Void, featuring the single “That Old Black Hole”.

Esquire proclaims “‘That Old Black Hole’ sounds like a glorious rally cry” and NPR calls it a “Fun, rocking, swirling look at a meaningless and mysterious world.”

Beloved Philadelphia band Dr. Dog release a staggering burst of vital rock n roll with their 2012 record, Be The Void. The album is the raucous follow up to the group’s critically praised Shame, Shame. Having evolved from a band whose primary creative outlet was the album making process, into one that favored the energy of their live performances, Dr. Dog knew they wanted to document the new dynamic they had developed on the road. Tracking live in the studio and turning up the guitars, the band has delivered a truly great cathartic rock n roll album played with near reckless abandon and passion, blending their early punk infused energy with the songwriting craft that made Fate and Shame, Shame fan favorites.

Dr. Dog’s Be The Void is a truly great rock n roll record and the unmistakable sound of a band whose moment has arrived.
