LITTLE BARRIE RISE TO THE OCCASION WITH THE RELEASE OF THEIR THIRD ALBUM KING OF THE WAVES to Visit Headliners Feb 21

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on January 31, 2012
Little Barrie will be opening for Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires at Headliners  on Feb. 21st..

Already being hailed throughout Europe, Japan, and much of the rest of the world for their incendiary rock ‘n’ roll, English trioLITTLE BARRIE are poised to make a huge splash in the United States with the release of their latest album KING OF THE WAVES onFebruary 28, 2012 via Tummy Touch Records.

Since their last release in 2007, the band has dedicated themselves to honing their musical reputations, doing everything from appearing live with Primal Scream to collaborations with the likes of Morrissey andMark Ronson. It’s been nearly five years since Little Barrie has released new material, but King of the Waves definitively proves that it’s been absolutely worth the wait. Guitarist/frontman Barrie Cadogan and bassist/vocalist Lewis Wharton are joined on the album by the new addition of drummer/vocalist Virgil Howe, son of renowned Yes guitarist Steve Howe. The resulting sound produced by the band is as intensely electrifying as one might expect from such a dynamic and in-demand group of individuals. It calls to mind an old school Detroit rock ‘n’ roll showdown between Link Wray and The Creation, with the MC5 and Motown’s best in attendance to cheer both sides, and the omnipresent threat of a killer wave lurking just overhead.

Longtime friend and collaborator Edwyn Collins co-produced the album with Little Barrie, just as he did their first, 2005’s We Are Little Barrie, and even sings backing vocals on the track “Money In Paper”. Engineer Sebastian Lewsley also returns onKing of the Waves, recorded at Collins’ West Heath Studios in north London. Although the band members pursued their own projects following their 2007 release Stand Your Ground, eventually they found that all roads led them happily back to Collins to create their triumphant third release.

Little Barrie is already a massive success in Japan and elsewhere abroad, with a prestigious eight-page spread in Japanese Rolling Stone, and #1 and #2 positions on Japan’s iTunes and Amazon charts respectively. They are currently playing select dates across Europe while preparing to take the United States by storm with the release of King of the Waves on February 28th and a spring tour with dates soon to be announced.

This is a Bassnectar 2011 tour wrap up video that just dropped to announce the 2012 tour for his upcoming album.  I’m showing you this because he sold more hard tickets last year than any EDM artist (including Tiesto, all the others).  I found that to be so wild.  He plays shows of 10-20k people on his own (not festivals). Around the 2 min mark it shows how massive these shows are.    He’s the OG long hair thrashing behind tables with an epic fanbase but with little fanfare in 10 years (his own choosing).  More on him coming soon.   Just making you aware  -KLF

THE SWELL SEASON ANNOUNCE LAST MINUTE SHOW TO PERFORM INTIMATE SET AT MCCABE’S

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on January 27, 2012

The Swell Season at The Brown Theater in Louisville, KY

First show together since October 2010
Proceeds to go to two charities
Los Angeles – January 26, 2011 –The Swell Season featuring Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova will be performing an intimate set at the legendary McCabe’s Guitar Shop on February 12, 2012.   The Swell Season have made a habit of calling McCabe’s home when in the Los Angeles area having performed there a number of times.  This will be the first show the duo has played since October 2010 and their first time back in Los Angeles since headlining a sold out Hollywood Bowl show in July 2010.  At the time the duo were touring in support of Strict Joy their follow up to the Grammy nominated Once soundtrack. While The Swell Season has been relatively quiet over the last year their music and name has not.  The documentary, The Swell Season debuted at Tribeca Film festival and went on to play at numerous festivals and theaters across the country.  It comes out on DVD on March 13, 2012. Once The Musical opened this past winter to rave reviews and quickly sold out its entire three month run at The New York Theatre Workshop. The musical has now moved to Broadway and opens on March 18, 2012 at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre.Separately both Marketa and Glen have remained active. Marketa released her debut full length Anar on Anti Records in fall of 2011 and has toured continually in support of it.  Glen has been busy recording and touring.  He supported Eddie Vedder in summer 2011 and headed to Europe on his own headlining run later that fall.  This coming year is going to prove busy for both of them with further recording projects and touring (see dates below).

This show quite innocently came together as the two find themselves in Los Angeles for an event with The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.  Proceeds from this show will be going to two charities that close friends of Glen and Mar have championed for some time.   The first is the animal shelter, Camp Cocker (http://www.campcocker.com/) and the second is Batonga Foundation (www.batongafoundation.org), which provides secondary education to girls in Africa.

Death Cab for Cutie to play The Louisville Palace April 13

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on January 18, 2012

Friday, April 13, 2012

8:00pm
Death Cab for Cutie are an indie-rock band hailing from Seattle, Washington, who’ve grown to become one of the biggest and, arguably, most important bands in the world. Formed by Benjamin Gibbard in 1997, Death Cab for
Cutie have earnt a reputation as emotionally poignant, not least of all for Gibbard’s lyrics.

Death Cab for Cutie was formed in 1997 at Western Washington University, as Gibbard’s solo project. Having spent that whole summer listening to Elliott Smith‘s Either/Or, Gibbard had written a set of songs too sad to play in his then-band Pinwheel. Taking his name from a Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band track featured in The Beatles’ 1967 film Magical Mystery Tour, Gibbard recorded the demo You Can Play These Songs with Chords. Following its strong reception, Gibbard turned Death Cab into a full-time project, enlisting the recording engineer, Chris Walla, on guitar, and current/former housemates Nicholas Harmer and Nathan Good on bass and drums, respectively.

In November 2004, Death Cab for Cutie signed a “long-term worldwide deal” with Atlantic Records. Said Gibbard, to The AV Club: “We made that very un-indie-rock move of actually succumbing to our ambition as a band, and saying, ‘You know what? I want as many people to hear this band as possible.'”

The O’Jays are coming to Horseshoe

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on January 16, 2012

The O’Jays are an American R&B group from Canton, Ohio, formed in 1963 and originally consisting of Eddie Levert (born June 16, 1942), Walter Williams (born August 25, 1942), William Powell (January 20, 1942 – May 26, 1977), Bobby Massey and Bill Isles. The O’Jays were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. The O’Jays had their first hit with “Lonely Drifter”, in 1963. In spite of the record’s success, the group was considering quitting the music industry until Gamble & Huff, a team of producers and songwriters, took an interest in the group. With Gamble & Huff, the O’Jays (now a trio after the departure of Isles and Massey) emerged at the forefront of Philadelphia soul with “Back Stabbers” (1972), and topped the Billboard Hot 100 the following year with “Love Train“. Their hit “For The Love of Money” is the theme song for Donald Trump’s TV show The Apprentice.

Don’t miss this chance to see The O’Jays at Horseshoe Southern Indiana on March 30th, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. in the Showroom.  Tickets go on sale Friday January 20th, 2012 and may be purchased through Ticketmaster or the Horseshoe Box office.

An Evening with The Civil Wars

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on January 16, 2012

Civil Wars

The Civil Wars memorized the audience at a sold out show in The Brown Theater Friday evening. The duo of Joy Williams and John Paul White entertained mostly with only their amazing vocals and White’s guitar. Williams spend a handful of songs on the keyboards but this show  was all about  mixing two incredible voices sharing leads and harmonies. What is special about their show is the ability to perform in a no frills atmosphere where any mistake would be readily identified. Backed by Paul’s excellent guitar they kept the audience entertained with splendid duets. It’s just two performers blending their voices while Williams dances around Paul’s guitar.

The pair’s strong set included all of their “Barton Hollow” album”  which appeared on many music magazines best of 2011 list. The band did do reworked covers of  The Jackson Five’s, I Want You Back” and began their encore with Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean”. It was a beautiful show based on tremendous talent.

The Staves, The sisters from England opened the show displaying great vocal harmonies backed only by guitar and ukulele. The very talented group set the tone for a magical evening of vocal excellence.
