LEGENDARY MUSICIANS JOIN FORCES TO HELP UNICEF SAVE CHILDREN AFFECTED BY DROUGHT AND FAMINE IN HORN OF AFRICA DURING “MONTH OF GIVING”

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on July 26, 2011

On the 40th anniversary of the groundbreaking Concert for Bangladesh, the first major music benefit for a humanitarian cause, the music community is coming together yet again for UNICEF, this time to help provide emergency relief for children in famine and drought-affected regions in the Horn of Africa. UNICEF is calling the situation in the Horn of Africa the “worst humanitarian emergency in the world,” with Somalia being the epicenter of the crisis. To pay tribute to the Concert for Bangladesh and its organizers George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, this August has been designated as the “Month of Giving.” During the Month of Giving all donations to the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF will benefit UNICEF’s life-saving programs for children in the Horn of Africa. To jump start this fundraising initiative, the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF, which was founded by Olivia Harrison, wife of the late George Harrison, is immediately releasing $1 million to UNICEF for emergency efforts there. As part of the Month of Giving, musicians and performing artists across the world will engage with fans at their concerts, and by tweeting and posting content to their websites and Facebook pages. These artists include the original Concert for Bangladesh performers Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, and Leon Russell, as well as Arcade Fire, Monty Python, Elvis Costello, Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Doors, Selena Gomez, The Go-Go’s, Brian Wilson, My Morning Jacket, Nas, Jackson Browne, and more. To see a full list of participating artists, visit theconcertforbangladesh.com. “It’s deeply heartening to see how the compassion of musicians is handed down from generation to generation,” said Olivia Harrison, founder of the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF. “In 1971 the crisis was in Bangladesh, today it’s the Horn of Africa. My thanks go out to all the musicians who have pledged their support.” The Concert for Bangladesh album makes its digital debut today exclusively on the iTunes Store (www.iTunes.com). In honor of the altruistic sprit that gave birth to the Concert for Bangladesh, each download will benefit the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF. iTunes, Apple Records Inc., and all artists, songwriters and publishers associated with the concert will keep no income from the digital sales of the album and have waived all fees. In a worldwide 72-hour online event, The Concert for Bangladesh feature film will be available for free streaming in its entirety from Saturday, July 30 through Monday, August 1 on iTunes, georgeharrison.com and theconcertforbangladesh.com. In 1971 George Harrison and Ravi Shankar staged two concerts at New York’s Madison Square Garden that brought together a star-studded cast of musicians to alert the world to the plight of the Bangladeshi people, victims of simultaneous floods, famine and civil war. The Concert for Bangladesh, which supported UNICEF’s programs in the country, pioneered the all-star concert benefit model, which continues to move hearts and raise money today. In the tradition established by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF continues to support UNICEF programs in Bangladesh and has expanded its reach to other countries where children are at risk. Today the Horn of Africa is facing what is being called the worst drought in 60 years, and famine has been declared by the United Nations in two regions of southern Somalia. More than 2 million children are acutely malnourished, including half a million children who are at imminent risk of death if they do not receive immediate lifesaving assistance. “Forty years ago this August, the friendship between George Harrison and Ravi Shankar forever changed music and the lives of countless Bangladeshi children. Today millions of children in the Horn of Africa desperately need our help. We are humbled by the outpouring of support from the music community led by Olivia Harrison, Apple Records and our friends at iTunes,” said President and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF Caryl Stern. A brief video message with information about how to help is available for streaming on georgeharrisonfundforunicef.org and on iTunes. In the U.S., supporters can text FRIEND to UNICEF (864233) to give $10 to the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF (messaging and data rates apply), or visit theconcertforbangladesh.com to donate and learn more. ABOUT THE GEORGE HARRISON FUND FOR UNICEF The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF is a joint undertaking between the Harrison family and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to support UNICEF programs that provide lifesaving assistance to children, including health, education, nutrition and emergency relief. In the tradition established by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF continues to support UNICEF programs in Bangladesh while expanding its influence to include other countries where children are in need. AbouT UNICEF UNICEF has saved more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization in the world. Working in more than 150 countries, UNICEF provides children with health care, clean water, nutrition, education, emergency relief, and more. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF supports UNICEF’s work through fundraising, advocacy, and education in the United States. UNICEF is at the forefront of efforts to reduce child mortality worldwide. There has been substantial progress: the annual number of under-five deaths dropped from 13 million in 1990 to 8.1 million in 2009. But still, 22,000 children die each day from preventable causes. Our mission is to do whatever it takes to make that number zero by giving children the essentials for a safe and healthy childhood. JASON ALDEAN’S “DIRT ROAD ANTHEM” DRIVES ALL THE WAY TO NO. ONE THIS WEEK ON THE BILLBOARD COUNTRY SONGS CHART

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on July 19, 2011

ASHVILLE, TENN – July 18, 2011 – Country rocker Jason Aldean scores his seventh No. one song as “Dirt Road Anthem” drives into the top slot on the Billboard Country Songs chart this week.  The third consecutive PLATINUM release off Country’s best-selling album of 2011, MY KINDA PARTY, the track also tops the Country Digital Singles Chart again this week with over 1.3 million singles sold to date.

“We definitely knew when we recorded this song, we’d turn some heads.  Thankfully, when they turned, they also started nodding along,” laughs Aldean.  “It’s been a great song to play live and also to be able to do some experimenting with for tv performances and things like that.  I love being able to put out a big ballad like our duet with Kelly and come back with something a little different the next time.   I don’t want anyone to ever think they’ve got me figured out exactly!”

Simultaneously, Aldean’s duet with pop powerhouse Kelly Clarkson “Don’t You Wanna Stay” continues to climb the AC, Hot AC and Top 40 charts.  Both songs follow the success of the lead single “My Kinda Party,” making this the third consecutive No. one hit from Aldean’s fourth studio effort.

Aldean spent this last week in Phoenix at the Major League Baseball’s All Star Week, where he played in the Celebrity and Legends softball game and performed on ESPN’s broadcast of the 2011 Homerun Derby.  He is also featured this month in ESPN magazine’s celebrity series “Fans Like Us” with Justin Timberlake, John Legend and more.  Click here to see behind the scenes of the photo shoot with Aldean and Kenny Mayne:  http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/6761993/celebrities-justin-timberlake-john-legend-eliza-dushku-showcase-their-fan-allegiances-espn-magazine

Aldean’s MY KINDA PARTY TOUR continues to crisscross the country selling out the nation’s biggest amphitheaters with openers Chris Young and Thompson Square.  For more information and a full list of tour dates, visit www.jasonaldean.com.

Nashville, Tenn. – July 18, 2011 – Multi-PLATINUM country music group Lady Antebellum is sharing new details today on their forthcoming third Capitol Nashville studio album OWN THE NIGHT, in stores Sept. 13.

After sweeping the 2011 GRAMMY Awards earlier this year, the singer/songwriters returned to Nashville to focus on writing and recording the follow up to their top selling NEED YOU NOW.  The trio penned 10 of the new disc’s 12 tracks, including their fastest rising and current Top 10 single “Just A Kiss.”  Collaborating again with veteran producer Paul Worley, Lady Antebellum’s Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott also return as co-producers.

This album was created from the ground up—we are writing these songs, playing these instruments and creating these arrangements.  With OWN THE NIGHT, more than ever before, I think we share a real feeling of accomplishment both as a band and as friends.”

“Our only hope and expectation for this record is that it will build on the first two,” adds Charles Kelley.  “At the end of the day, we just want our fans to be able to say that we continue to give them solid albums with solid songs they can enjoy from start to finish.”

OWN THE NIGHT Track List:

1. We Owned The Night

2. Just A Kiss

3. Dancin’ Away With My Heart

4. Friday Night

5. When You Were Mine

Since its release in Jan. 2010, the album has sold over five million copies across the globe, spawned three multi-week No. one hits (“Need You Now,” “American Honey,” “Our Kind of Love”), taken home five GRAMMY Awards and scored over a dozen other award show trophies.

Gary Allan’s “Get Off The Pain Tour” sells out Horseshoe Casino

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on July 18, 2011

Gary Allen performing at Horseshoe Casino

Gary Allan brought his “Get Off the Pain Tour to Horseshoe Casino for two sold out shows Friday and Saturday. Allan was surrounded by overjoyed fans who danced, sang and screamed with his every move.

With the allure of a modern day outlaw, Gary Allan has won over legions of fans with his signature blend of rugged vocals, rebellious lyrics and raucous live performances.  He has sold over 7 million albums and released five platinum and gold albums in a row including two that topped the Billboard Country Albums Chart.  Allan has also topped the charts with four #1 hits at country radio and has nearly a dozen Top 10 hits to his credit.  He has been described as “dark and dreamy” in Entertainment Weekly, “soulful and rough around the edges” in Playboy and deemed a “maverick” by Rolling Stone.  He has sold out venues as a headliner from coast to coast, appeared on Late Show With David Letterman, Tonight Show With Jay Leno, CBS Early Show and has landed on the covers of Country Weekly, Pollstar and People magazine.  While becoming a force on the country music scene, Allan has remained true to his artistic voice each step of the way.

Allan impressed,  Jess Terrell who stated,” Gary Allan’s personal turmoil is reflected in his music.  Songs like “Get off on the Pain”, “Songs about Rain”, “Right where I need to be”, “Watching Airplanes”, “Smoke Rings in the Dark”, “Nothing on but the Radio”,  and “Best I Ever Had” reach out to the emotions of every fan.     He has overcome throat surgery and the loss of a wife to suicide to become a hard-nosed country rocker whose music touches his fans”.

The band slowed down only briefly about mid-way when Allan performed “No Regrets”  accompanied only by guitarist Jamie Hanna resplendent in his kilt.  The entire band soon returned to the stage to shake  the building’s foundation then raised the roof with the encore “Keep your hands to yourself” the Georgia Satellites’ classic.
