The streets surrounding of the center were alive with excitement and anticipation prior to the show as people got their first taste of the long awaited entertainment center. They were not disappointed. The facility is first class in every way. Fans were greeted by friendly ushers and servers who thanked you for coming and wished you a good time.

The Eagles took the stage around 8:25. The sound was excellent, crisp and clean throughout the building. These guys may have started by in 1971 but the vocals and harmonies are as beautiful as ever.

The band mixed early hit songs with newer material from the 2007 album,” Long Road out of Eden”. The stage featured a  large video screen behind the band playing video’s  made for each song. On each side above the stage were video screens displaying close ups of the band members and occasionally the crowd.

The core members of the band, founder, Glenn Frey, Don Henley , Timothy B Schmit and Joe Walsh where backed by a horn section, two keyboardist, and additional drummer, Scott Crago.  Along with guitarist Stuart Smith who played a large role in the opening set handling electric portions of the music while the core members played acoustic guitars and sang. The song” Hotel California” highlighted the first set.

After taking a break of 30 minutes the band began with several mellow tunes, including “Best of My Love” while seated.

They then kicked in with many of their five number one hits and six number one albums blending well known solo numbers from Walsh, Henley and Frey.

Joe Walsh absolutely stole he show with “ Walk Away”, Life’s Be Good”, “Rocky Mountain Way”, and a jazzy  “Funk 49” backed by a strong horn section and guitar licks from, Walsh, Frey and Smith.

Don Henley’s “Dirty Laundry”  followed , and “Life in the Fast Lane” added final touches to an excellent performance.

The encore of “Desperado” sent a satisfied audience home with memories that will last a life time.

Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses

Band of Horses returned to Louisville’s Brown Theater performing their Infinite Arms Tour to a nearly sold out venue. The house was full of dedicated fans who sang along with the band on every tune.

Lead by Ben Bridwell’s  masterful voice, the Horse’s harmonized beautifully during their two hour plus set playing 27 songs with as many as four guitars matching notes on many of them.

The band was joined by former member, Blake Mills who also opened the show and fit in like he had never left.

The indie folk rock sound filled the air while an impressive background scenes gave you the feel of a peaceful night in nature.

Brad was also on the bill featuring Pearl Jam guitarist, Stone Gossard who anchored the band along with excellent vocals from Shawn Smith. The band was very interesting mixing sounds of grudge, rock and soul with psychedelia for a refreshing sound.

CHURCHILL DOWNS INCORPORATED SUSPENDS HULLABALOU MUSICFESTIVAL FOR 2011; DISSOLVES ENTERTAINMENT GROUP

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on October 6, 2010

Churchill Downs Incorporated (“CDI”),

(NASDAQ: CHDN) announced today that it will not conduct its HullabaLOU Music Festival in

2011 and that it has dissolved its Churchill Downs Entertainment (“CDE”) Group.

The HullabaLOU Music Festival will not be conducted in 2011, but may return in future years once

the economy and the live-music business in the U.S. have fully recovered, and if suitable calendar

dates can be found. HullabaLOU 2010 was plagued by three consecutive July days with heat

indexes exceeding 105 degrees.

CDI formed the CDE group in 2009 to develop large-scale, live entertainment events that could be

conducted at CDI facilities and at other non-CDI venues. CDE developed the inaugural

HullabaLOU Music Festival conducted on July 23-25, 2010, at Churchill Downs Racetrack, and the

Fork, Cork & Style food and wine festivals conducted at Churchill Downs Racetrack on September

12, 2010, and at Arlington Park Race Course on October 2, 2010.

“It has become clear that launching new, upscale entertainment events in the current economy,

particularly with the persistently high levels of unemployment, is extremely difficult,” said CDI

President and Chief Executive Officer Robert L. Evans. “While we received exceptionally high

marks from the nearly 80,000 people who attended our CDE events, we fell short of the attendance

levels necessary to operate these events profitably.”

Steve Sexton, CDI Executive Vice President and President of CDE has decided to resign from CDI

to pursue other interests. “I would like to thank Steve for his many contributions to CDI’s success,”

said Evans.

Sexton stated: “I am proud of the CDE team and what we accomplished, and I have enjoyed my

tenure at both Arlington Park Race Course and at Churchill Downs Racetrack during my nine years

with CDI. I was fortunate to lead superb teams at each venue, overseeing six record-setting

Kentucky Derbys, two Breeders’ Cups, and the $121 million renovation of Churchill Downs

Racetrack. I am looking forward to expanding my career in a new direction.”

Three other full-time CDE employees will also be leaving CDI as the result of this action.

It was only fitting they began with a medley of songs from original Hoosiers, The Jackson 5, “ABC”’ “I Want You Back” and “Billie Jean”. Eric Clapton ANNOUNCES DATES OF 2011 TOURING

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on September 16, 2010

Eric Clapton

RELEASES 19th SOLO ALBUM THIS FALL ENTITLED CLAPTON

Directly on the heels of Eric Clapton’s recent announcement of a new album being released this year, the artist has announced an initial set of dates for his 2011 tour that will encompass Ireland and the U.K. including four nights at London’s famed Royal Albert Hall.  Additional touring dates in Europe, Asia and the U.S. will be announced shortly.

Critics are already raving about the latest Clapton album as a new and inspiring body of work by one of the world’s most legendary guitar players. Co-produced by guitarist and long-time collaborator Doyle Bramhall II, the album features an all star cast of musical collaborations starting with the legendary JJ Cale, drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Willie Weeks, and keyboardist Walt Richmond—and the sessions later added guests including Steve Winwood, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint, and Derek Trucks.  Clapton created a collection that touches on everything from century-old traditional brass bands to little-known country blues to brand-new originals. The result is both relaxed and revelatory, and unlike anything the guitarist has done in his legendary career.

Clapton has assembled an impressive band for the 2011 tour which will consist of long-time touring partners:  Steve Gadd (drums), Willie Weeks (bass), Chris Stainton (keyboards) along with Michelle John and Sharon White as backing vocalists.

Aerosmith The Cocked Locked and Ready to Rock Tour”

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on September 10, 2010

Aerosmith brought the Cocked, Locked and Ready to Rock Tour to Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, Thursday evening playing  a two hour set to an excited crowd that filled the pavilion and a good part of the lawn area.

The Boston band was formed in 1971 and released their first album, simply title “ Aerosmith” in 1973. With a  music style rooted in blues based hard rock , they soon became known as “The Bad Boys of Boston”. Lead by the swagger and raw whine of vocalist Steven Tyler, many considered them an American version of the Rolling Stones.

Their fame was built in the seventies with the release of platinum selling albums “Get Your Wings” and “Toys in the Attic”.  Early shows were filled with high energy , glam and heavy metal with legendary ballads such as “Dream On” allowing you brief moments to catch your breath. The band paid its dues with heavy touring that lead to induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

Now forty plus years later, surviving many breakups and squabbles, the latest between guitarist, Joe Perry and Tyler over rumors that Tyler will be a judge on American Idol next season without consulting the band. Prompting Perry to discuss auditioning a new singer and saying “ This may be the last time we go on the road”

Heavy drug use and numerous rehabs slowed the band to near extinction. However renewed success came with by releasing an Aerosmith Guitar Hero video game. Their more recent  songs have been tied to movies and videos appealing to a younger audience and scoring big hits with much slower pop ballads barley resembling the original style of the band.

The show began with a strong version of “Eat The Rich” highlighting Tyler’s vocals and a strong wall of sound from guitarists Perry and Brad Whitford. It was followed by their classic  cover “Train Kept a Rolling” it soon became evident that the years of touring and problems do not affect the energy and musical abilities of the band.

The set list included many of the more recent hits, and left off the early rockers but added surprises such as Joe Perry’s guitar dual with his guitar hero video clone. Joey Kramer’s drumming and Tom Hamilton’s bass continued to keep the music on track while Tyler pranced across the stage and down the catwalk in his skin tight zebra striped bell bottoms, aviator sunglasses and fedora hat . Tyler’s voice is still strong and although he limited any extra screams he can still hit the high notes. He often joined Perry to share a microphone and the spotlight. Whatever differences the two have offstage isn’t a factor in the music. It’s clear this band is on a mission to prove it’s once given title of “America’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band”

The set covered music from all eras, ending with classics “Dream On” and “Walk This Way”

Sammy Hagar opened the show mixing his hour long set with songs from his solo career with hits from his former bands, Montrose, including “Bad Motor Scooter” and several Van Halen songs, highlighted by “Best of Both Worlds and “Why Can’t This be Love” . His nonstop rock and roll set kept the audience on their feet for the entire show. As he finished he stated,” The only bands I would open for are Aerosmith and Stones”. He left no doubt that the next time you see him he will be the top bill.

Paula Deen herself will be on hand to preside over the opening festivities which are slated to take place on September 3rd, 2010. The buffet will feature stations modeled after some of Paula’s well known eateries such as Lady & Sons, Deen Brother’s Barbeque, and Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House.  The culinary team at Horseshoe will undergo extensive training on the preparation of Paula’s famous dishes and Paula herself will help train the staff to ensure her dishes are prepared as if she were in the kitchen, and that service in the buffet has her unique style of Southern hospitality.

Much of America is familiar with Deen; she is America’s Most Popular Chef having sold 8 million copies of her cookbooks.  She is a two time Emmy Award winner who is currently star of the Food Networks Top Rated Shows – Paula’s Home Cooking, Paula’s Party and Paula’s Best Dishes.  Her magazine Cooking with Paula Deen has a circulation over one million strong.

My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel Shares Performances of Three Songs From Solo Album

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on August 23, 2010

All Birds Say Out August 31st on ATO Records

Leading up to the release of his solo album All Birds Say, which is out next week on August 31st (ATO Records)My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel has been steadily revealing performances of some of the tracks off the record.   You may have seen Broemel do a rendition of “Questions” over at MOG, creating an epic solo version of the track that builds to a thrillingly noisy climax.  He also played the earnest and whimsical “Enough,” which recently debuted at My Old Kentucky Blog. Lastly, his version of “Carried Away,” a contemplative and heartfelt ballad that My Morning Jacket recently performed, premiered atJamBase.  Please feel free to post and share all three videos!

As evident by these three clips, Broemel is a sophisticated songwriter  and an elegantly effortless performer.  He has the lyrical perspective of an individual who truly reflects and learns from his life’s experiences.  However, Broemel favors a Zen-like approach, keeping his philosophical musings from getting anywhere near being preachy.  Needless to say, MMJ fans who know him solely from the fiery riffs and guitar solos he performs with the band are going to see a whole other side of him.
