With his latest album, This Old Road, Kristofferson lays a chunk of his own soul on every track. Kristofferson began the show playing two songs before bringing out Haggard along with his band and the two traded licks and songs the remainder of the show. Kristofferson apologized for his cold. which at time greatly hampered his voice. But did sing many of his hits including , Sunday Morning Coming Down”, Why Me Lord”, and “Lovin Her was Easier”.
Merle Haggard was in top form backed by a stellar band including his son, Ben Haggard. The show featured many of his greatest songs including “Think I’ll just sit here and drink”, Okie from Muskogee” and “Workin Man Blues”. The word “legend” usually makes an appearance at some point when discussing Merle Haggard. It’s an acknowledgement of his artistry and his standing as “the poet of the common man.” It’s a tribute to his incredible commercial success and to the lasting mark he has made, not just on country music, but on American music as a whole.
The show sold out in a matter of weeks and the audience was energized and ready to enjoy this show from the start. It was clear they understood that this was an opportunity to witness something special.
