Tedeschi Trucks Band to headline inaugural benefit on September 24th

Louisville, KY ‐ (August 17, 2011) – Rock Strong 4 Life, the region’s first concert and event

to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Foundation, will take place Saturday, September 24th at

Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Headlining the inaugural benefit

with a special performance will be nationally‐acclaimed blues based and southern rock

group Tedeschi Trucks Band.

“This benefit is the first of its kind for Louisville and we’re thrilled to welcome such a

nationally‐respected group to Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium,” said Dewayne Rudd, Rock

Strong 4 Life non‐profit organizer and UPS pilot. “Most importantly, we’re honored that the

University of Louisville gave us an incredible opportunity to raise awareness and generate

funding to help the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation find a cure for this devastating disease.”

The Tedeschi Trucks Band headlines an evening focused on sharing stories of heartbreak

and hope surrounding CF, and using the universal languages of love and music to support

the fight against the life‐threatening disease.

Joining the Tedeschi Trucks Band and kicking off the benefit will be a local group, the GDrive

Band led by Gustavo Renovalez and featuring Louisville blues vocalist, Laurie Jessup,

who also works as a UPS jet mechanic supervisor. Renovalez, worship minister at He Visto

la Luz church near Churchill Downs, has a seven year old daughter, Aldana, with CF and

says, “We hope this evening of music and testimonies about our struggles against a

merciless disease will result in CF standing for ‘Cure Found’.”

Cystic fibrosis is a potentially fatal genetic disease that affects over 100,000 worldwide.

Approximately 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective gene. CF

substantially impairs the respiratory system and digestive function, making simple acts of

eating and breathing a challenge. The average life expectancy is 37 years and there is no

cure for the disease. This special event will help fund research that ultimately could give

children and young adults with CF the quality of life and future they deserve.

The concert caps an entire day of awareness for the genetic disease that affects 30,000

people in the United States and over 70,000 people worldwide. Prior to the concert, the

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will host the “Climb for Life Event” in the morning in which

University of Louisville football players and Head Coach Charlie Strong will welcome the CF

supporters walking the steps at Cardinal Stadium to raise money for a cure.

About Tedeschi Trucks Band

Unquestionably the most formidable husband/wife team in the history of southern rock and blues music,

Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi have put together a new band which is officially scheduled to hit the

road in the spring and summer of 2011 with a studio album soon to follow. The first generation of this

new lineup made appearances at some of the most prestigious festivals of last year including New

Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest, Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Fest, Telluride Blues & Brews Festival, and

Japan’s Fuji Rock Fest.

Trucks’ slide guitar playing is second to none. He has led his own The Derek Trucks Band for over 15

years, has been the slide guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band for more than ten, toured the world

with Eric Clapton and was featured on the cover of the 2007 Rolling Stone “New Guitar Gods” issue.

Combine that with Trucks’ 6th studio album release (“Already Free”) debuting at #19 on the Billboard

Top 200 Chart and it’s no wonder why he is the youngest musician to date to make Rolling Stones list of

“Top 100 Guitarists of All Time”.

Tedeschi has risen to fame with multiple Grammy Award nominations. Her powerful singing voice and

fearless stage presence have made her one of the most stirring soul and blues musicians of our time. Add

her knack for musical truth telling and her commanding guitar playing, and you have an artist who is

quickly taking her place as the new generation’s greatest female blues guitar/singer and, perhaps, one

of the best ever.

With the added accolade of individual 2010 Grammy Award nominations, this duo will undoubtedly

take the world by storm and are poised to become one of the greatest husband and wife performing

duos of all time.

311 coming to The Louisville Palace

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on September 19, 2011

311 will play The Louisville Palace on December 5th.

All five members of 311 grew up in the 1970′s inOmaha,Nebraska.  In 1990 & 1991 the band released three independent records on their own label (What Have You Records). The records were called “Dammit,” “Hydroponic,” and “Unity.” With these records and their solid live show, the band quickly established a following in theMidwestand then set out for the West Coast.  In July ’95 they released their third cd “311″ and once again set out on tour. By ’96 the shows and the fanbase had grown considerably – and the media which had basically ignored 311 until then, began paying attention. In September of ’96 (14 months after the release of the “311″ album) the song “Down” hit the airwaves and became an across the board success at radio and MTV. “Down” went to #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart and the follow-up single “All Mixed Up” went to #2.  In 2010, 311 returned to the road for Spring, Summer and Fall Tours. Summer tour featured special guest The Offspring. Touring highlights that year included 311 Day inLas Vegas– a sold out show at theMandalayBayArtsCenter(14,000 tickets sold to fans in all 50 U.S. States and 13 countries), as well as first time shows in Guam andIndonesia. Plus first time shows inAlaska, which completed 311 playing all 50 states. Other highlights included Japan, Hawaii, and a special Halloween show in Atlanta.

TONIGHT’S STONE TEMPLE PILOTS SHOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED:

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on September 14, 2011

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS were forced to postpone the last four shows of their summer tour after lead singer Scott Weiland was diagnosed with “inflamed vocal cords.” The band was scheduled to perform last night (Tuesday, September 13) at the Taft Theater in Cincinnati, Ohio and tonight (Wednesday, September 14) at Iroquois Amphitheater in Louisville, Kentucky. But per Weiland’s physician’s diagnosis, Scott was put on immediate vocal rest. Dr. Sid Khosla, director of the UC Health Voice Center in Cincinnati, said, “Today myself, Dr. Eva Van Leer and ENT Dr. Keith Casper consulted with Mr. Weiland. Upon a video stroboscopy, we determined his left vocal cord has likely scarring and his right vocal cord is tremendously inflamed. With such a heavy concert schedule and vocal activity, we determined that Mr. Weiland could potentially run the risk of a vocal hemorrhage or suffer permanent damage, hence putting him on complete vocal rest.” STP apologizes to their fans and refunds will be issued at point of purchase.

Dwight Yoakam plays Horseshoe Casino

Dwight Yoakam

Review by Jess Terrell

Someplace between Classic Country and the Rockabilly roots of Rock n Roll is the guitar infused upbeat Honky Tonk sound popularized in the fifties by the young George Jones and the late Johnny Horton.    In later years Honky Tonk was carried west to California where it evolved to the Bakersfield sound of Merle Haggard and the late Buck Owens.

Last night at Horseshoe, Dwight Yoakam proved that Bakersfield Honky Tonk is alive and well.  Rockin guitar and rapid fire nasal vocals punctuated an upbeat country sound that had the sell-out crowd dancing and singing for the entire 90 minute show.  Yoakam delivered his vast catalog of hits in rapid fire succession pausing only to comment that he had family in Louisville and to let the crowd lead on “I sang Dixie”.  The show was marred only by a distorted sound system and a 30 minute late start.  Otherwise the party boogied on.

Yoakam payed homage to his influences with Johnny Horton’s “Honky Tonk Man” that featured an audience sing-a-long.  Yoakam’s tribute album to Buck Owens found life in “My Heart Skips a Beat” as well as an impromptu take on the “Buckaroo” instrumental that used to feature Owen’s late guitarist Don Rich.     Owens’ work was revisited in both ballad “Close up the Honky Tonks” and fun “Act Naturally”.  The “Streets of Bakersfield” that  Yoakam recorded with Owens shortly before his death  was particularly moving.

The performance moved quickly from one tune to another mostly mirroring the studio versions with superb musicianship the only deviation was a more laid back version of Elvis’s “Little Sister” that was at first unrecognizable.  Otherwise one toe-tapper after another kept the audience on their feet.  Steam continued to build with “Little Ways”, “Ring of Fire”, and “1000 Miles” culminating with “Long white cadillac”.

The audience left reluctantly after the encore to scan the dial for Yoakam hits on the radio and dig the Buck Owens albums out of the closet.

Zombie Attack Walk 2011

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on September 2, 2011

On 8/29 at 8:29 Danger Run held its 2011 Zombie Attack Walk. It was a photographers dream. The Louisville Zombie Attack Walk has become a HUGE tradition in the Louisville area. The Zombie Attack Walk is a annual event that occurs every year. Why 8:29 on 8/29? This is the tradition that was started by it’s creators John King, Mike Welch, and Lyndi Lou marking their birthday. Little did they realize at the time that it would turn into such a popular event. That tradition reanimates itself each year in form of thousands of zombies walking down the middle of Bardstown Rd. Zombies stop the traffic in the streets and Louisville is in chaos. Much like the Dan O’Bannon’s Return of the Living Dead set in Louisville.

Béla Fleck Unveils Concerto for Banjo and Orchestra with Nashville Symphony

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on September 1, 2011
Béla Fleck will present the world premiere of his Concerto for Banjo and Orchestra — one of the first ever written for the instrument — with the Nashville Symphony on September 22-24 at Schermerhorn Symphony Center. To be performed by Fleck on his vintage 1937 mahogany Gibson Mastertone banjo, the Concerto marks a significant new departure for Fleck, who calls the piece “a liberating experience for my efforts as a composer and hopefully for the banjo as well.” Commissioned by the Nashville Symphony, Concerto for Banjo and Orchestra will be the centerpiece of the orchestra’s opening concerts in the 2011/12 SunTrust Classical Series.
Given the names Béla (for Bartók), Anton (for Webern) and Leoš (for Janáčék), Fleck seems to have been destined to play classical music. Having launched a prolific and wildly successful career as a genre-melding instrumentalist, first with the New Grass Revival and later with the Flecktones, he made the classical connection with his 2001 solo album Perpetual Motion. Released on Sony Classical, the recording went on to win a pair of GRAMMYs®, including Best Classical Crossover Album. Fleck has won a total of 14 GRAMMYs®, and, with 30 nominations, he has been nominated in more different categories than anyone in GRAMMY® history.
Fleck dedicates his new Concerto to pioneering banjoist Earl Scruggs, who first inspired him to take up the instrument. The composer says that the piece reflects the dual influences of classical music and bluegrass. “You can hear an evolution in my own writing of the piece as it goes on,” he observes, noting that he wanted to “explore the new possibilities of the banjo as a member or the orchestra, while respecting its roots in bluegrass and jazz.”
Concerto for Banjo and Orchestra is perfectly matched at the Nashville Symphony concerts with Aaron Copland’s famous Appalachian Spring, which celebrates the American spirit with music of breathtaking beauty and directness. Concluding the performance is Tchaikovsky’s larger-than-life Fourth Symphony, the Russian composer’s favorite piece, which sweeps the audience with an emotional palette that ranges from melancholy to exuberance. The Thursday, September 22, performance will be webcast live via the Nashville Symphony’s website.
For more information about the concert or to purchase tickets, please call 615.687.6400 or visit NashvilleSymphony.org.
The GRAMMY® Award-winning Nashville Symphony has earned an international reputation for its recordings and innovative programming. With 140 performances annually, the 84-member orchestra offers a broad range of classical, pops and jazz, children’s concerts and community engagement programs. As a national and international ambassador for Tennessee, the Nashville Symphony has received far-reaching acclaim for its 19 recordings on Naxos, making the ensemble one of the most active recording orchestras in the country. These recordings have received a total of 13 GRAMMY® nominations and six GRAMMY® Awards. On May 12, 2012, the Nashville Symphony will perform at Carnegie Hall as part of the Spring for Music festival, which recognizes orchestras for adventuresome, original programming.
