R.E.M. formed in 1980 when singer Michael Stipe met guitarist Peter Buck in an Athens, GA, record store where Buck worked. After recruiting bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry, R.E.M. released its first single, “Radio Free Europe,” in 1981, followed by 1982’s Chronic Town EP. Widely credited with inventing the college-rock genre, R.E.M. became the most influential American alternative rock band in history — inspiring such artists as Sonic Youth, Pavement, Nirvana, and Radiohead — for achieving multi-platinum mainstream success while maintaining their distinct identity. Over the course of its career, the band has released 15 studio albums and has sold more than 85 million albums worldwide.
R.E.M., Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, 1982 – 2011 features three new songs that R.E.M. finished after they completed their last album, Collapse Into Now: the single “We All Go Back To Where We Belong,” which goes to radio and will be available for sale on October 18th, “A Month of Saturdays,” and “Hallelujah.” All three songs were recorded over the summer in Athens with Accelerate and Collapse Into Now producer, the estimable Jacknife Lee. The band came roaring back with those two albums in the last two years, achieving some of the best reviews of their career and enabling them to go out at the top of their game.

The Tedeschi Trucks Band play Rock Strong 4 Life
After a wet cold morning, The Rock Strong 4 Life Benefit on Saturday turned out to be a perfect evening at Popa John’s Stadium. The sun came out just in time to warm up the 1000 plus audience and The Tedeschi Trucks Band took over from there to deliver a performance that may have been the best show to play Louisville this year.
As husband-wife couples go in the world of music, it is a challenge to find a duo as well-fitted and naturally prolific as that of singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi and guitarist Derek Trucks. They are both heavily steeped in the blues tradition, yet open to far-ranging influences including rock, gospel, jazz and World music. Each has produced recordings that share a sensibility best described as a swampy mix of rootsy, rockin’ American music. The two have guested on each other’s albums, toured together intermittently, and last year they each received individual Grammy nominations in the category of “Best Contemporary Blues Album” for their 2009 albums, Tedeschi for Back To The River and Trucks for Already Free (which he won). As well, they often perform together with the Allman Brothers Band—with whom Trucks continues to play as co-lead guitarist.
From the opening number , “Don’t Let Me Slide” it was obvious the this would be a special night. The combination of Susan Tedeschi’s stunning vocals and Derek Trucks extraordinary guitar, lead a spectacular eleven-member ensemble overflowing with talent and musical familiarity. Harmony singers Mike Mattison and Mark Rivers joined forces with brothers Oteil Burbridge (noted for his years as bassist with the Allman Brothers Band) and Kofi Burbridge (longtime keyboardist/flutist with The Derek Trucks Band),along with a pair of drummers J. J. Johnson and Tyler Greenwell, The band also included a brass section consisting of trumpeter Maurice Brown, tenor saxophonist Kebbi Williams, and trombonist Saunders Sermons.
The band’s set included many songs from their critically acclaimed “Revelator” album along with powerful versions of Delaney and Bonnie’s , “Coming Home”, “Uptight” and a moving version of Derek and the Domino’s, “ Anyday” that included two chilling guitar solos from Trucks.
Derek Trucks is unquestionably one of the top guitar players in the world. He was selected by Eric Clapton to record on his albums, “The Road to Escondido” and “Clapton” touring with him in 2007. An amazing slide player who rivals Duane Allman, the man who he now covers in The Allman Brother Band. Trucks handles his task with ease and on this night he consistently received standing ovations for his artistic solos. The 32 year old was rated 81st in the 2003 Rolling Stone Top 100 guitarist of all time at the age of 24, and was selected in 2007 as one of three New Guitar Gods by the magazine.
During the course of the performance each member gets their time in the spotlight. Kofi Burbridge played an jam filled keyboard and flute solo, while his brother bassist Oteil played and sang a jazzy solo showing his range of both vocals and instrument. There were solos by each drummer and brass member as well. Every member showing the high level of expertise on their instruments.
Although her husband’s guitar playing stands out Susan Tedeschi can play a mean guitar herself contributing with a solo that had Derek smiling with pride. They ended the show with their latest hit song, “Bound For Glory” and returned for an encore had everyone dancing to a musical medley of Sly Stone’s Simple Song and I Want To Take You Higher”
The proceeds of the event were donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Organizer Dewayne Rudd and the event committee should be commended for this effort to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.
The concert capped an entire day of awareness for the genetic disease that affects 30,000 people in the United States and over 70,000 people worldwide. Prior to the concert, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation hosted the “Climb for Life Event” in the morning in whichUniversity of Louisville football players and Head Coach Charlie Strong welcomed the CF supporters walking the steps at Cardinal Stadium to raise money for a cure.

Rick Springfield at Horseshoe Casino Southern Indiana
Rick Springfield’s latest visit to Horseshoe Casino Southern Indiana Friday evening was very similar to his previous shows. The mostly female audience screamed with excitement with every move of the aging heartthrob,
The night began with his video history with filled early music clips, award ceremonies and scenes from his soup opera character on “General Hospital.”
When Springfield appeared on stage to a frenzy of crazed women, he appeared very thin but fit. He later commented he has began a vegan diet and had lost fifteen pounds. “ Eliminate dairy products from your diet”, was his message and he added “this will be my only political statement of the night”.
The show relies heavily on his stardom as a teen idol. He realizes that many of the women in his audience grew up worshiping him as a sex symbol. He happily plays to this during his show by smashing roses into his guitar, walking into the crowd, and singing with his fans. For his two song encore, he was shirtless to the joy of his audience.
The set included his big hits, “Don’t Talk To Stranger”, “Jessie’s Girl” and a cover of Paul McCartney’s “Jet”. Springfield show still has plenty of energy and his musicianship has improved over the years. His guitar play during JimI Hendrix’s , “Red House” was surprisingly good.
At the age of sixty two, Rick Springfield still delivers a quality show and for a few brief hours allows his fans to return to the dreams of their youth. For many this show provides the perfect setting for fun shared with old friends and without children, husbands, or worries of the world.

They Might Be Giants Make Final WFPK Waterfront Show Big!
WFPK’s final Waterfront Wednesday ended it’s tenth year of the series in a Giant way. The largest crowd of the season filled the waterfront on a beautiful September evening to enjoy the music of Louisville’s own The Deloreans, J Roddy Walston and They Might Be Giants.
The Deloreans kicked the night off warming up the crowd with their catchy harmonies and fine musicianship.
J Roddy Walston and The Business took the stage as the lawn filled with excited music lovers many who were obvious fans of their music. The picturesque sunset served as the background, while theTennessee band brought their brand of rowdy rock tinged with southern grit, energized the crowd setting the bar high for They Might Be Giants.
The band from New York City founded by John Flansburgh and John Linnell. TMBG writes, records and tours continuously, has been involved in numerous television and film projects, and has an on-going podcast. Nearing their 30th year in music, they have won two Grammies. The John’s were joined by Dan Miller on guitar, Danny Weinkauf on bass, and Marty Beller on drums.
The band continue their ways of touching all audiences with their wit and fun loving show that included music that covered their successful career. Intermingling long time favorites such as, “Birdhouse In Your Soul” , “Mesopotamians”with songs from the new album, “Can’t Keep Johnny Down” and rifts from rock classics such as “Crazy Train”.
They mentioned hanging out at The Galt House on Tuesday evening and joked about being happy to play next to The KFC Yum Center. They kept the audience involved with their colorful stage lighting and background videos. They included the audience in the song “Planet of The Apes”, using a laser to divide fans into either apes or people that filled the air with a shouts of people or apes!
Flansburg and Linell seemed to enjoy the large crowd stating, “This is the greatest show ever!” The pair seemed to really enjoy themselves throughout the show. With Linnell steadily controlling the music while Flansburg played rock star, frontman and cheerleader for the band.
They Might Be Giants released their new album, Join Us, July 19th through Idlewild/Rounder Records. On Join Us the Brooklyn originals have returned to rock and to their singular sensibility that made them an instant phenomenon in the world of alternative rock. The band’s new video for album track “Cloisonné” premiered on RollingStone.com. Directed by TMBG’s own John Flansburgh, the video was produced by Amy Hobby, edited by Tony Zajkowski and the the director of photography is Luke Geissbuhler (Borat, Helvetica). Check out the new ”Cloisonné” video HERE. .
This was a perfect ending to the tenth waterfront music season for WFPK. Louisville is extremely fortunate to have such fantastic and knowledgeable music station to bring these shows our way.

TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND ROLLING STRONG BEHIND CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED REVELATOR FALL CONCERT TOUR UNDERWAY
A dramatic leap forward for two of the music world’s most dynamic performers, singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi and guitarist Derek Trucks, introduced their new 11-piece ensemble—Tedeschi Trucks Band to rave reviews earlier this spring in advance of their first full CD release together. In June, Tedeschi Trucks Band debuted big with their inaugural album, Revelator, (Sony MASTERWORKS) breaking into the Billboard Top 200 Chart at #12, bringing both artists to their highest first week sales and charting of their careers. Recognized for their outstanding live performances and supported by an all-star lineup of musicians, the group is currently on tour across the U.S.
Tedeschi Trucks Band celebrated the release of Revelator with a soulful and anthemic performance of the album’s first single, “Learn How To Love” on both The Tonight Show and Conan followed by a flurry of positive reviews. In a 4 Star review, Rolling Stone praised the album as a “masterpiece” while USA Today called the album simply “Outstanding.” In recent concert reviews, Kansas City Star wrote “the stunning vocals of Tedeschi and the awe-inspiring guitar work of Trucks were showcased to perfection.” Boston Globe declared the “show a triumph,” as Charleston City Paper described the concert as “staggering, uplifting, and damn near soul-saving.”
As husband-wife couples go in the world of music, it is a challenge to find a duo as well-fitted and naturally prolific as that of Tedeschi and Trucks. They are both heavily steeped in the blues tradition, yet open to far-ranging influences including rock, gospel, jazz and world music. Tedeschi and Trucks have each shared stages with legends including Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock and Buddy Guy, and they often perform together with the Allman Brothers Band – which Trucks joined full time in 1999. Last year they each received Grammy nominations in the category of “Best Contemporary Blues Album” for their 2009 albums, Tedeschi for Back To The River and Trucks for Already Free (which he won). Now they have joined forces as a true musical family.
Revelator, co-produced by Trucks and Jim Scott (Dixie Chicks, Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers), is filled with smoky, blues-dipped rockers and heart-stilling ballads that show off, respectively, the gutsier and softer side of Tedeschi’s vocal ability, plus a series of emotive, story-telling solos shaped by Trucks’s uncanny agility on slide-guitar. Revelator echoes of so many great traditions—Delta blues and Memphis soul, Sixties rock and Seventies funk—organically flow together, blending with an entirely original, modern sensibility.
Tedeschi Trucks Band has been headlining shows in the U.S., Australia and Europe this year behind the new album. The group features harmony singers Mike Mattison (vocalist with Derek Trucks Band) and Mark Rivers, brothers Oteil Burbridge (noted for his years as bassist with the Allman Brothers Band) and Kofi Burbridge (longtime keyboardist/flutist with The Derek Trucks Band) with drummers J. J. Johnson and Tyler Greenwell, trumpeter Maurice Brown, tenor saxophonist Kebbi Williams and trombonist Saunders Sermons.
