MAVIS STAPLES DELIVERS ROUSING GRAMMY PERFORMANCE

MAVIS STAPLES DELIVERS ROUSING GRAMMY PERFORMANCE
IN HONOR OF LEVON HELM
Singer Is Currently In Studio Recording With Jeff Tweedy

The legendary Mavis Staples performed last night at the 55th Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. The revered singer appeared on stage for a moving tribute to the late singer/drummer Levon Helm of The Band. Along with Elton John, Zac Brown, Brittany Howard from Alabama Shakes, Mumford & Sons and T Bone Burnett who served as musical director, Staples belted out a moving rendition of The Band’s beloved song “The Weight.” The song has been an essential part of Staple’s own live set since she sang it with Helm and The Band for their farewell show captured in the 1976 film The Last Waltz.

At the end of the song, Staple’s rousing vocals earned her some impromptu applause from the musicians on stage and a reverent kiss on the hand from none other than Elton John. Soon after a number of prominent sources including  Questlove, Wanda Sykes, magazine The Fader, journalists Nelson George and Dream Hampton and others tweeted enthusiastically about Staple’s Grammy night performance.

A Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Staples is currently in the studio with Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) working on her upcoming 2013 release. The album will be the highly follow up to her critically lauded album You Are Not Alone which was also produced by Tweedy and won a Grammy Award in the Best Americana Album vocal or Instrumental category. The record was described by Time Magazine as “Gorgeous” and by Spin as “Inspired.” Rolling Stone listed Staples as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

Mumford and Sons add New Dates to 2013 Tour

Gentlemen of the Road Canada & US Stopovers announced

As Pep Guardiola would probably say, keeping possession of the ball is Rules One, Two and Three of football. As Mumford & Sons would definitely say, Rules One, Two and Three of being a band are: Play Live.

The Gentlemen of the Road Stopovers are all about live music. We get to put them on in towns not normally frequented by touring bands in buses or splitter vans. We deliberately look for towns that have something unique, or some vibe of which they are proud, explore them and enjoy what they have to offer.

It’s a real privilege that being in Mumford & Sons has allowed us to be able to shine a light on these towns, places that sometimes don’t get the love they deserve, and to be the facilitators of great musical coming-togethers. We actually get to put on our own shows. Which means that we get to ask our favourite bands to come and play a show with us, where we just get to watch them play all day. Four times in one summer. Badass.

But there’s another rule that applies to both football and music. Doing the Stopovers means that we get to invite a whole bunch of other people to watch these bands with us. And that, the shared experience, is basically all that live music is about.

We’re really excited to be doing more Stopovers and we can’t wait to see as many of you as possible this summer!

Jim James Announces North American Tour, Louisville 2/17

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on January 28, 2013
Jim James

Jim James

“The record is arguably the most adventurous and nakedly emotional thing James has done”
– Stereogum

Jim James is thrilled to announce his full US tour in support of his forthcoming debut solo album Regions Of Light And Sound Of God, out February 5 on ATO Records. “Hello friends!” says Jim.  “I have put together a special band of some of my oldest pals to help bring this album to life on the road! We are very excited about it and cant wait to bring it to light! See ya out on the open road!”  The nine songs on this album resist easy categorization, grasping influence of old-school R&B to island folk to hip-hop, each flickering into focus and then disappear throughout the album.   From the hazy space-funk of the opening “State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” to the chiming, operatic pop of “A New Life,” Regions of Light and Sound of God is complex but cohesive, intimate and hypnotic where My Morning Jacket might turn more wide-screen and epic.  Today, Jim is revealing the first listen of the album on NPR.

General on sales for the tour begin this weekend while Roll Call members (My Morning Jacket fan club) have first access pre-sales this Wednesday at 12noon EST.  For the duration of the tour, a percentage of proceeds of every ticket will benefit Cancer Research Hospital and Treatment Center, City Of Hope.  Along with his upcoming tour dates, Jim will also be performing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on February 4th alongside The Roots.  The following day (February 5th) he will return to Jimmy Fallon, sitting in for the entire show as a guest performer.

“The album knew what it wanted to be,” says James. “The songs would tell me what they wanted to be, and I just had to search around and find those sounds to bring them into this world.”

A Year In The Life of Gary Clark Jr.

Warner Bros. Records

A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF GARY CLARK JR.

ABC’S JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE! CONFIRMED FOR FEBRUARY 6TH

CLARK & BAND TO SUPPORT ERIC CLAPTON IN THE UK THIS MAY

CLARK JOINS JIMMY PAGE FOR VARVATOS SPRING 2013 CAMPAIGN

January 24, 2013 – (Burbank, CA) – Warner Bros. Records’ ascending artist Gary Clark Jr., who had a phenomenal 2012, has even more amazing things on the horizon for 2013.

Since releasing his debut EP The Bright Lights at the end of 2010, Clark has enjoyed a steady drumbeat of critical acclaim and been embraced by music fans for his fiery blend of rock & soul and blues & hip-hop with a self-styled, innate cool that Rolling Stone said (in its lead review) owes “as much to Kurt Cobain and the Ramones as Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker,” going on to add that Clark’s “shape-shifting calling card EP is grounded in tradition while standing on the brink of change.”

The 28-year-old Austin native has become a legitimate break-out phenomenon across the globe, and the best part is that it has all occurred in the most organic way imaginable: through hard touring and a commitment to giving his all night after night with enthralling, sweat-soaked live performances and powerful music that presents Clark’s unique interpretation of styles both old and new delivered in his own inimitable way.

Throughout the year, Clark was heavily in-demand as a live performer, the only one who made the rounds of nearly every major American music festival, including Bonnaroo, Coachella, Sasquatch, NOLA Jazz & Heritage Festival, Jay-Z’s Made in America, Metallica’s Orion Festival, Dave Matthews Band Caravan, Osheaga, and the Austin City Limits Festival, where Clark and his band set a new day-time attendance record. He was also invited to perform on Good Morning AmericaThe Late Show With David Letterman (twice), The Tonight Show With Jay LenoLate Night With Jimmy Fallon(twice), Conan, and Austin City Limits (an episode that will air Feb 16th).

In October, Clark released his album Blak And Blu, which debuted on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart at No. 6 and received raves from many major music outlets, including Rolling Stone (in yet another lead review), The New York Times, which called Clark “a guitarist of deep magnetism and tremendous feel,” and Spin, which declared: “There truly is nobody else like him around.” The accolades have kept coming. Since the release of Blak And Blu,

Clark has appeared in the pages of Rolling Stone (numerous times), SpinGuitar WorldVanity Fair,VibePeopleEntertainment WeeklyWall Street JournalAssociated PressEsquireGuitar Player(Clark was the first emerging artist to grace their cover in over 15 years), and countless others. High profile and influential media and news outlets also praised the artist and his album including, CNN, MSN, NPR, Huffington Post, AOL, MTV, Grantland, Life+Times, ESPN, Reuters, WireImage, Dial Global, and many others covering music and culture. As 2012 drew to a close, Blak And Blu found its way onto Year End “Best Of” critics lists around the world.

A myriad of song placements in TV and film throughout the year have played an integral part in introducing the music of Gary Clark Jr. to diverse audiences. Blak and Blu tracks “Don’t Owe You A Thang,” “Bright Lights,” “Ain’t Messin’ Round,” and “Glitter Ain’t Gold” have been featured in such TV shows as The CW’s Vampire Diaries, USA’s Suits, ABC’s Nashville, and A&E’s Longmire, as well as such films as Think Like A ManTrouble With The Curve, and the upcoming Stand Up Guys. Clark was also ESPN’s Artist of the Month in October. Having discovered Clark through word-of-mouth, music supervisors featured his music consistently throughout 2012, which left an impression on TV viewers and film-goers who may not have been aware of him otherwise.

After wrapping up tours of the U.K. and Australia, Clark made a triumphant return to the U.S. in November to perform a string of instantly sold-out tour dates on both coasts including three nights at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC and three nights at the Troubadour in L.A., each of which sold out within an hour. Clark also performed as part of the 35th Annual Kennedy Center Honors – a star-studded event attended by President and Mrs. Obama, and honoring Buddy Guy, Dustin Hoffman, David Letterman, Natalia Makarova, and Led Zeppelin.

To cap off the year, Clark joined rock icons The Rolling Stones for the band’s first U.S. “50 and Counting” concert at The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, in early December. The Stones were so taken with Clark that they invited him back to join them for their global pay-per-view concert that blew the roof off New Jersey’s Prudential Center on December 15th.

Clark is wrapping up a on tour in New Zealand and Australia with plans to return to Australia in February where he will perform at the annual Big Day Out Festival. Clark and his band will return to Los Angeles to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday, February 6th, on the outdoor stage performing “Ain’t Messin’ Round” and “Numb” from Blak and Blu. Fans can also expect some exclusive online performances as well.

Tours of Europe in February and March, plus a major tour of the U.S. in April, are planned with details to be revealed soon. We can confirm at this time that Clark and the band have accepted an offer to support dear friend Eric Clapton for a string of dates in April and May that include:

May 13                                        Birmingham, UK            LG Arena

May 14                                        Manchester, UK            Manchester Arena

May 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24 & 26     London, UK                  Royal Albert Hall
Apr 12, 13                                    NYC / Crossroads         Madison Square Garden

Finally, the latest campaign for the John Varvatos brand brings together music legend Jimmy Page, guitarist for “the greatest rock and roll band of all time” Led Zeppelin, paired with the 28-year-old emerging American music talent Gary Clark Jr. The images were shot in London by Danny Clinch, against a textured backdrop at the historic Rivoli Ballroom, where the two sharply dressed subjects stand out in an iconic black and white portrait.

“…a three-piece who re-invigorate the stagnant art of great guitar music in thrilling new ways….For far too long, the sweet sound of the six-string has been misappropriated by charlatans whose intentions and abilities fail to do it justice….The Sundresses are here to reverse this downward trend. Combining punk, blues, rockabilly, dark country flavours and 1930’s swing, with a hefty dose of acerbically arch, politicised lyricism, they don’t do what everyone else does, and that’s what makes them great….These genii represent the rebirth of the Great American Band.” www.phonovault.com/?p=1021
