Death Cab for Cutie to play The Louisville Palace April 13

Death Cab for Cutie are an indie-rock band hailing from Seattle, Washington, who’ve grown to become one of the biggest and, arguably, most important bands in the world. Formed by Benjamin Gibbard in 1997, Death Cab for
Cutie have earnt a reputation as emotionally poignant, not least of all for Gibbard’s lyrics.
Death Cab for Cutie was formed in 1997 at Western Washington University, as Gibbard’s solo project. Having spent that whole summer listening to Elliott Smith‘s Either/Or, Gibbard had written a set of songs too sad to play in his then-band Pinwheel. Taking his name from a Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band track featured in The Beatles’ 1967 film Magical Mystery Tour, Gibbard recorded the demo You Can Play These Songs with Chords. Following its strong reception, Gibbard turned Death Cab into a full-time project, enlisting the recording engineer, Chris Walla, on guitar, and current/former housemates Nicholas Harmer and Nathan Good on bass and drums, respectively.
In November 2004, Death Cab for Cutie signed a “long-term worldwide deal” with Atlantic Records. Said Gibbard, to The AV Club: “We made that very un-indie-rock move of actually succumbing to our ambition as a band, and saying, ‘You know what? I want as many people to hear this band as possible.'”

Jane’s Addiction to play The palace March ,23rd
Great bands break rules, but legends write their own. JANE’S ADDICTION have actually written the rule book for alternative music and culture through a combination of genre-defying classic songs and a cinematic live experience. Their songs serve as the Ten Commandments for alt rock, inspiring an entire generation of bands such as Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and Tool. When the Los Angeles quartet came along, they merged alternative and rock like no one before, becoming the first alternative rock band, creating a new sound and attitude.
Perry Farrell stands out as one of music’s most forward-thinking and enigmatic frontmen, and his vocals soar with vibrancy, vulnerability and vitality. Guitar god Dave Navarro conjures simultaneously psychedelic and epic riffs. Stephen Perkins’ tribal stomp remains hypnotic and transfixing. In 2010, Jane’s Addiction began writing songs for the new album. By 2011, recording began on what would become The Great Escape Artist, an October 2011 release on Capitol, to be supported with a worldwide tour in 2012. The band and producer Rich Costey (Muse, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol) added TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek to the creative team. Sitek, best known for his production work on TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Foals, is writing and playing bass on the new album.

Review coming but here are some photos:
Chicago returns to The Louisville Palace
In 1970, I suffered the most tragic event in my young life when I went to view the list posted for our school basketball team and found my name was not on it. I had spent up to that time, my ever waking minute playing sports and dreaming of even playing pro sports when I grew up. In my mind there was some question about would I make the starting line up, but had no thoughts about not making the team period!
I had a few other hobbies such as catching critters and riding mini bikes and I always followed music ever since my parents let me purchase the Beatles first album a few years earlier.
I was permitted to join the Columbia Music Record Club, which allowed me to get twelve free albums for only a penny and a commitment to buy several more in the next year.
I can’t remember all my choices but my favorites were “The Jimi Hendrix Experience”, “Grand Funk Railroad” and Chicago.
Since my sports career ended abruptly, I turned to music and began attending concerts before I could drive. The third concert I ever attended was Chicago at Freedom Hall in July of 1970. It cost me $6.00 and totally entrenched me in live music for the rest of my life.
Chicago was one of the first bands to fuse rock with brass instruments (Blood Sweat and Tears was the other) and aside from a few mellow songs, like my later prom theme ,”Color My World” they were mostly rock and jazz.
The original band featured Terry Kath an excellent guitar player who also sang many early songs for the group. In 1978, Kath died of an accidental, self inflicted gun shot wound playing russian roulette with a gun he thought was not loaded.
Bassist Peter Cetera began writing and singing lead on many of the bands albums and the music direction of the band shifted to more of a pop sound. Cetera left in 1985 to pursue a solo career.
Despite the personnel changes over the years, the group is still active four decades after its founding. They are one of the few major rock groups that have never broken up or even taken an extended hiatus. As of June 2010, four of the six surviving founding members (major songwriters Lamm and Pankow, plus Loughnane and Parazaider) remain providing continuity, while Jason Scheff has been with the band 25 years, Tris Imboden 20 years, and Keith Howland 15 years.
Many years have past since I first saw Chicago but when they visited The Louisville Palace on Wednesday evening the band proved that they are still a musical machine filled with experience and excitement. The entertained the nearly full venue with songs from every album adding four Christmas songs to the set for the holidays.
Although I lean to the earlier hits from the band, it was hard not to enjoy the pop numbers as the audience joined the band sing and dancing on most song choruses.
All songs sounded fresh with the encore, “25 to 6 to 4” highlighting a great show.
It was a special night filled with memories for the crowd, a majority of baby boomers.
My son and his fiancee attended surrounded by their parents, both of which grew up fans of Chicago. As we were leaving I was asked me, ”Dad do you remember when you gave me my first guitar? The only thing you could play was the first few chords of “Smoke on the Water” and “25 to 6 to 4”! “I can’t hear this song without thing that”.
It was the only guitar I ever learned but at least I taught him to love music and know a great song even if it’s for the wrong reason!

311 coming to The Louisville Palace
311 will play The Louisville Palace on December 5th.
All five members of 311 grew up in the 1970′s inOmaha,Nebraska. In 1990 & 1991 the band released three independent records on their own label (What Have You Records). The records were called “Dammit,” “Hydroponic,” and “Unity.” With these records and their solid live show, the band quickly established a following in theMidwestand then set out for the West Coast. In July ’95 they released their third cd “311″ and once again set out on tour. By ’96 the shows and the fanbase had grown considerably – and the media which had basically ignored 311 until then, began paying attention. In September of ’96 (14 months after the release of the “311″ album) the song “Down” hit the airwaves and became an across the board success at radio and MTV. “Down” went to #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart and the follow-up single “All Mixed Up” went to #2. In 2010, 311 returned to the road for Spring, Summer and Fall Tours. Summer tour featured special guest The Offspring. Touring highlights that year included 311 Day inLas Vegas– a sold out show at theMandalayBayArtsCenter(14,000 tickets sold to fans in all 50 U.S. States and 13 countries), as well as first time shows in Guam andIndonesia. Plus first time shows inAlaska, which completed 311 playing all 50 states. Other highlights included Japan, Hawaii, and a special Halloween show in Atlanta.
