Now, with expectations at fever pitch, the Alabama Shakes have delivered Boys & Girls—six of the songs from that initial Nashville session, and another five recorded during the rest of the year. From the heart-rending title song to such stomps as “Rise to the Sun,” the album demonstrates the sense of groove and space the band learned from their idols, along with a blistering force and emotion that simply can’t be learned.Overwhelmed by the response they’ve already received, there is one perception of the band that they want to challenge. “A lot of people think we’re a soul revival act,” says Cockrell. “That’s an honor to me, classic R&B is my favorite kind of music, but everybody has their own influences. Brittany is way more into rock and roll—she likes things pretty amped up most of the time.””Retro soul is not what we’re going for, though it’s understandable why people say it,” says Howard. “We take inspiration from that, but we all understand Black Sabbath, too. On the record, we left a lot of room for whatever we want to do in the future.”The release of Boys & Girls marks the arrival of a major new rock and roll band. To the members themselves, though, what’s been most exciting has been the reaction they have felt on stage, whether tiny local dates or under the glare of the media.”It seems like everyone can tell how into it we are,” says Cockrell. “Every show, people say they can feel how much we love what we’re doing.

Tedeschi Trucks Band releases “DARLING BE HOME SOON” VIDEO DEBUT

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on July 7, 2012
Tedeschi Trucks Band
“DARLING BE HOME SOON” VIDEO DEBUT
We’re pleased to bring you the world premiere of our new video, for “Darling Be Home Soon” off Tedeschi Trucks Band’s recent live album Everybody’s Talkin’. Written by John Sebastian of the Lovin Spoonful (one of Derek’s dad’s favorite bands), the track was famously covered by Joe Cocker’s group Mad Dogs & Englishmen, a group that remains a major inspiration for the 11-piece traveling musical circus that is TTB.

TTB’s version of “Darling Be Home Soon” is a wonderful showcase of Susan’s vocals soaring above the gentle swell of the band’s groove. Featuring a trumpet solo by Maurice Brown and a slow-building extended solo by Derek as the band brings it down to a whisper behind him, “Darling Be Home Soon” is easily one of the highlights of an album with no shortage of beautiful vocals and show-stopping solos.

We’re sharing the video with fans first, and we hope you’ll do us a favor and pass it along to a friend or two of your own. Thanks to all for their ongoing support of TTB and all their love forEverybody’s Talkin’.

Indaba Remix Contest – Voting Starts Tomorrow

Phase one of our contest on Indaba Music to remix “Everybody’s Talkin'” is winding down as submissions are due today. But Derek and Susan need your help in choosing a winner. Visit the contest page, check out some of the submissions and vote for your favorite effort to make sure that the grand prize (a ’61 Gibson SG reissue, a PRS amp and a Shure vocal mic) goes to the most deserving effort. (Indaba Media is the sponsor of this contest. For Official Rules, clickhere. Sony Music Entertainment is not a sponsor of this contest.)

TTB Tour Rolls On

After a few weeks on the road, TTB is operating at full force and heading to a town near you soon, particularly if you live in Canada or across the Midwest. Since debuting in 2003 with a multi-chart gold single, racking up reams of critical praise, opening for the Rolling Stones and playing and recording with such legends as Willie Nelson and Carlos Santana,Rockpango further enforces All Music Guide‘s assertion that Los Lonely Boys are “one of America’s premier rock bands.”  The band has released 7 studio albums, 2 live albums, and 2 live concert DVDs, including Texican Style Live, an account of the largest ever South-by-Southwest audience of 25,000. The band continues to pervade pop culture in national ads for Budweiser, a track on Guitar Hero, guest spots on Carlos Santana’s All That I Am, and countless TV performances on Leno, Kimmel, Letterman and Conan. Recently, Billboard notched their hit Heaven at #4 on their “Top 50 Adult Contemporary Songs Ever.”

More on Los Lonely Boys and Rockpango

Can anything even more magical happen in the already charmed career of Los Lonely Boys? You bet. It’s called Rockpango, their first self- produced long player on their own LonelyTone/Playing In Traffic Records. And yeah, it’s magical indeed.

At least as magical — and maybe more so — as debuting in 2003 with a multi-chart gold single, selling millions of albums, winning a Grammy, racking up reams of critical acclaim, opening for The Rolling Stones, and many more accomplishments for the Texican rock’n’roll trio of brothers. Plus playing and recording with such legends as Willie Nelson and Carlos Santana, associations that give a strong hint at what’s at work here on Rockpango.

After proving themselves one of the most stunning and wonderful musical success stories of the last decade, Los Lonely Boys are now carving out their legend with their fourth studio album. Even though the band has already shown they can “up the ante with greater musicianship and confidence” (People) every time out, on Rockpango they heighten the trajectory, open up their sound, and show what flourishing maturity feels like from these veteran yet still young and burgeoning musical talents.

Rockpango is a spirit and sound coined by Los Lonely Boys that takes the next step from fandango (a beat of loving celebration) and then huapango (another infectious Latin rhythm that gets the fiesta cooking) to a full-scale Tex-Mex American roots rock party galore. Bursting out of the gate with the simmering and slinky “American Idle” that scans today’s tough economic times, and wrapping up 10 tracks later with the fierce and fiery assertion that love is the answer on “Believe,” Los Lonely Boys look at the big picture around us with the concerns and continuing faith that come with well-grounded adulthood.

Their ever-expanding musical vision fills the set with new facets that further reveal the group’s already notable artistic diversity. “16 Monkeys” is a delightfully funky slice of infectious neo-bohemian wit and wordplay, while orchestration by the Tosca String Quartet adds classic rock-pop sophistication on the achingly beautiful “Road To Nowhere” and the Beatle-esque gem “Smile.” And they fuse deep blues with a hip-hop twist on “Porn Star,” which includes a razor-sharp rap at the tail end by Kush, one of their Texas extended family relations.

They soar on “Fly Away,” rip it up to percolating Latin beats on “Love In My Veins” and “Baby Girl,” and reassert their mastery of the classic music that influences them as demonstrated on their recent 1969 EP. They deliver ‘60s style blues-rockers on the rousing title tune and powerfully loping “Change The World” — two more slices of their spot-on social commentary and consciousness.

The trademark Los Lonely Boys genetic vocal blend is deeper, richer, more fluent and confident than ever. The rhythms are utterly irresistible as well as flush with smart syncopation and muscular drive, abetted on some tracks by tour percussionist Carmelo “Melo” Torres. The brothers’ songwriting skills stamp indelibility on every winning number. And Henry Garza goes even beyond what Guitar World hails as being a “guitarist with chops out his ass who doesn’t care about chops [and] just opens up and plays.” Joined by veteran Austin player Riley Osbourn on keyboards, Los Lonely Boys deliver and more on Rockpango.

“I’m super proud of it,” says JoJo Garza, bassist and middle brother in the triumvirate. “It’s just progress, maturation and growth. Growing up, being older, seeing the world we’re living in. It’s also touching base with home.”

Los Lonely Boys tale to date is already the stuff legends are made of: Playing behind their father as kids in cantinas and honky-tonks. Moving to Nashville in their teens to try to win a record deal. Returning to their native Texas, where the brothers made their bones on the club scene as a live act. Releasing their self-titled debut, which goes double platinum, and penning a #1 radio hit in “Heaven.”

Two more stellar studio albums followed: Sacred (2006) and Forgiven (2008). In 2009, they cut 1969, an EP that leaps back four decades to reveal how the group’s roots extend well past their birthdates on songs by The Beatles, Santana, The Doors, Buddy Holly and Tony Joe White. 2010 brought about the release of Keep On Giving: Acoustic Live! a snapshot of their recent acoustic tour.

So after all that, what’s left but to meet the new decade with the great leap forward, upward, outward and onward of Rockpango? “It was just time to grow and change,” explains JoJo. “But not change too much. It’s kind of like a tree. A tree doesn’t actually change much as it grows. It gets taller, grows more branches, gets thicker and stronger.

“I think it’s one of our best if not our best,” he adds. “We took the ball and I think we scored a touchdown.”

And after eight years of championship seasons, Rockpango paves the way for Los Lonely Boys to enter the rock’n’roll pantheon of legendary musical artists while also remaining true to themselves. “We’re still Lonely Boys,” JoJo insists, chuckling in agreement that they are also now Los Lonely Men who have truly come of age on their latest. “We’re still family, we’re still three brothers, we’re still doing what the good Lord has blessed us with, and that’s singing and playing for people who really want to listen.”

David Gray at Iroquois Amphitheater

David Gray at Iroquois Amphitheater

David Gray visited the Iroquois Amphitheater, Louisville, KY, on  a 103% Friday evening. The record breaking heat didn’t seem to slow down Gray or his audience as he ran through his arsenal of popular songs while wearing his trademark suit. Performing to his second consecutive sold out audience Gray may have set another record by filling the amphitheater.

The high temperatures didn’t seem to bother his voice or the audience as they sang together on “Sail Away and many other of their favorites. Although still over 90 degrees after sundown no one seemed to care as they watched Gray move between piano and guitar during the show.

Yuna  open the show with an entertaining set that highlighted her beautiful voice and showcased her talent on guitar and the ukelele.

Yuna started out as a solo MySpace artist in 2006, singing in both English and Malay.Yuna’s meteoric rise in the Malaysian indie music scene is largely due to the strong following she gained via Myspace. Having played at many gigs since the release of her Demo, EP and then two local albums, she is now focusing on promoting and performing music on her debut US Album.Yuna also will be a part of Lollaplooza 2012 line up.

In 2008,she released her self titled EP which become a massive hit in Malaysia most notably the single ‘Deeper Conversation’
Yuna was nominated as one of MTV Iggy’s Best New Bands in the World. She performed at the historic MTV Studios in Times Square New York singing “Decorate”, “Come As You Are” and her new single “Live Your Life”, which is produced by Pharrell Williams of N.E.R.D.

Even Mayor Greg Fischer, a great supporter of  the Louisville music scene aved the heat to introduce David Gray but not before plugging all local upcoming Louisville music shows.

Charlie Pride Plays Horseshoe Casino

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on July 2, 2012

Charlie Pride

Country Music Hall of Fame member, Charlie Pride performed at Horseshoe Casino Southern Indiana to a full house on Saturday. The 74 year old still has an excellent voice and overcame a brief sound problem at the start of his set to show he is still a viable entertainer. Pride moved effortlessly around the stage and joked about the location. as well as staring and checking his watch when two latecomers walked in during his third song. Pride covered his collection of hit songs during the show.

Since his signing with RCA records in 1965. His first two releases in 1966 did not chart.  Management did not release his photo for two years to avoid  the fact country music was considered a white medium. The success of “Just Between You and Me”  his third single ( #9 on the country charts) was enormous. He won a Grammy Award for the song the next year.In 1967, he became the first black performer to appear at the Grand Ole Opry since harmonica player DeFord Bailey. Bailey was a regular cast member of the Opry from 1925 through 1941, and made a final appearance in 1974.[14] Pride also appeared in 1967 on the American Broadcasting Company’s “The Lawrence Welk Show

Between 1969 and 1971, Pride had eight single records that simultaneously reached #1 on the US Country Hit Parade and also charted on the Billboard Hot 100: “All I Have to Offer You (Is Me)“, “(I’m So) Afraid of Losing You Again“, “I Can’t Believe That You’ve Stopped Loving Me“, “I’d Rather Love You“, “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone“, “Wonder Could I Live There Anymore?”, “I’m Just Me“, and “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’“. The pop success of these songs reflected the country/pop crossover sound that was reaching Country music in the 1960s and early 1970s, known as “Countrypolitan“. In 1969 his compilation albumThe Best of Charley Pride sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.

Pride sang the Paul Newman directed film Sometimes a Great Notions main soundtrack song “All His Children” in 1970.The film starred Newman and Henry Fonda and received two Oscar nominations in 1972, one being for the song that Pride sang.

In 1971, he would release what would become his biggest hit “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'”, a million-selling crossover single that helped Pride land the Country Music Association’s prestigious Entertainer of the Year award, as well as Top Male Vocalist. He won CMA’s Top Male Vocalist award again in 1972.

“Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'” became Pride’s signature tune. Besides being a five-week country #1 in late 1971 and early 1972, the song was also his only pop Top 40 hit, hitting #21, and reaching the Top Ten of the Adult Contemporary charts as well.

During the rest of the 1970s and into the 1980s, Pride continued to rack up country music hits. Other Pride standards of the 1970s and 1980s include “Mississippi Cotton Picking Delta Town,” “Someone Loves You, Honey,” “When I Stop Leavin’ (I’ll Be Gone),” “Burgers and Fries“, “I Don’t Think She’s in Love Anymore“, “Roll On Mississippi”, “Never Been So Loved (In All My Life)” and “You’re So Good When You’re Bad.” Like many other country performers, he has paid tribute to Hank Williams, with an album of songs that were all written by Hank entitled There’s a Little Bit of Hank in Me, which included top-sellers of Williams’ classics “Kaw-Liga,” “Honky Tonk Blues” and “You Win Again“.

Pride has sold over 70 million records (singles, albums, compilation included).

He stayed with RCA Records until 1986. At that point, he grew angry over the fact that RCA began to promote newer country artists and didn’t renew contracts with many older artists who had been with the label for years. He moved on to 16th Avenue Records, where Pride bounced back with the #5 hit, “Shouldn’t it be Easier Than This.” He had a few minor hits with 16th Avenue, as well.

Pride’s lifelong passion for baseball continues; he has an annual tradition of joining the Texas Rangers for workouts during Spring Training. A big Rangers fan (Dallas has been his home for many years), Pride is often seen at their games.

In 2008, Pride received the Mississippi Arts Commission’s lifetime achievement award during the organization’s Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts.

On October 4, 2000, He was honored with the highest country music award, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Charley wept when his name was announced by Hall of Famer, Brenda Lee.

Los Angeles, CA, May 31, 2012 – The Americana Music Association took to the City of Angels to announce the 2012 nominees for the Americana Honors & Awards, presented by Nissan. Music aficionado John C. Reilly announced the nominations at Thursday’s event hosted by Americana ambassador Jim Lauderdale at The Grammy® Museum’s Clive Davis Theatre.
The celebration also featured performances by special guests Lucinda Williams, Shelby Lynne and Robert Ellis alongside the Americana All-Star band, led by Buddy Miller with Lauderdale, Greg Leisz, Don Heffington and Don Was. The finale song honored Americana icons; Levon Helm, Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson, who were the heartbeat of the genre, with a loving rendition of ”Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”
A genre that honors the roots of American music and its tapestry of influences, nominees for the 2012 ceremony reflect its brightest talents. From lyricists that articulate the human condition to unrivaled instrumentalists, Americana has been described by The New York Times as “the coolest music scene today.”

Umphrey’s McGee: Fans who have followed Umphrey’s McGee for any period of time know that there are only two guarantees: you never know what you’re going to get, and Umphrey’s always delivers. How else can a band be relentlessly innovative in both music AND fan relations for 13+ years? The latest expected twist arrives in the form of their newest studio album (and first with ATO Records) ‘Death By Stereo’ (9/13), the follow up to 2009’s ‘Mantis.’ ‘Mantis’ surprised fans with a collection of music never before played, and surprised the music industry with an innovative marketing campaign that catapulted the album PAST the Heatseekers chart, debuting at #62 on Billboard’s “Top 200” chart without any radio play or television appearances.

“Our live show is malleable and every night is its own thing, where you never know where things are going to go,” keyboardist Joel Cummins explains. “People aren’t used to us playing three-and-a-half to four-minute songs back to back, so this album is a completely different experience than our live show, which is certainly something we were trying to do.”
