John Mayer’s “Battle Studies World Tour” plays Freedom Hall

John Mayer recently stated after a backlash of controversial interviews to ” just play my guitar”. He did just that Saturday evening bringing his 2010-2011 World Tour to Freedom Hall. Playing to a crowd of 12,000 fans, Mayer dug deep into his catalogue of hit songs dusting off ,” No Such Thing” that had been left off his set lists in recent years. The highlights of the show were songs, “Waiting on the World to Change, and “Gravity”. He also mixed in songs from other artists such as Bill Wither’s, ” Ain’t No Sunshine”, Journeys, ” Don’t Stop Believing” and finishing his encore set with “Crossroads”.
During the show,Mayer told his fans, “I used to perform just to make it in this business, now I perform for you”. Viewed by many as a writer of pop love songs, Mayer showed why Rolling Stone Magazine selected him as one of the upcoming guitar gods. Many of his guitar solos lasted over four minutes, containing riffs similar to his hero, Stevie Ray Vaughn.
The music was mixed with Mayer’s interaction with his fans, reading twitter messages from fans at the show, leading a C-A-T-S and C-A-R-D-S cheers, and praising excellent opening act Michael Franti and Spearhead, ” I have to play well every night just to keep up with those guys.”
Mayer’s mouth and studio music may not appeal to the normal rock in roll crowd. But seeing his live show will change that. The stage , featuring a large background screen , beautiful lighting, and an excellent sound system create a first class performance. He was backed up by his excellent band featuring his drummer, Steve Jordan and former guitarists for The Pretenders and Paul McCartney’s touring bands, Robbie McIntosh.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela at Brown Theatre
Rodrigo Y Gabriela played a splendid concert the Brown Theatre, Sunday evening to over 1300 appreciative fans.
Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero hail from Mexico City but have lived in Ireland for the past ten years.
Their lighting fast Latin-infused instrumental guitar music is difficult to label. A mix of Latin, pop, rock, jazz, and heavy metal all done with acoustic guitars.
The pair began in a Mexican Thrash band “Tierra Acid” until finding their unique sound in the streets and bars of Ireland.
Since this was their first visit to Louisville , they seemed surprised to see a full house of knowledgeable fans very familiar of their music. Some of which came from Indianapolis to see the show.
They played songs from 2006 Rodrigo and Gabriela, an album that sold over 600,000 copies, worldwide and from their newest release 11:11.

The Swell Season, the Oscar-winning duo of Frames frontman Glen Hansard and Czech ingénue Marketa Irglova, are putting the finishing touches on ‘Strict Joy,’ (Oct 27/Anti- Records), the follow-up to their beloved, surprise hit 2007 film and gold-certified soundtrack ‘Once.’ The twelve new, original songs on ‘Strict Joy’ were recorded last year and document a time of great change and tumult.
‘Strict Joy,’ which borrows its name from a work by Irish poet James Stephens, was co-produced by Hansard and Peter Katis (The National, Interpol), and recorded mostly at Katis’ Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, CT. In addition to Hansard and Irglova, the album features Frames members Colm Mac Iomaire (violin), Joe Doyle (bass), Rob Bochnik (guitar), plus guitarist Javier Mas (Leonard Cohen), pianist Thomas Bartlett (Doveman), percussionist Chad Taylor (Chicago Underground Duo), horn players Steven Bernstein and Clark Gayton from Levon Helm’s band, and others.
The Swell Season generated a wave of acclaim during the 2008 awards season including two Grammy nominations and an Oscar win for Best Original Song, for their hit single “Falling Slowly.” The duo performed the song on the Oscars telecast, and Irglova provided one of the most memorable and poignant moments of the evening when host Jon Stewart called her back to the stage after a commercial break to give her acceptance speech. The success of ‘Once’ also led to a sold out world tour for The Swell Season which was captured for an upcoming documentary. http://www.theswellseason.com

Feb 18 – David Nail
David Nail’s album, I’m About To Come Alive, is a collection of songs that captures the highs and lows and the hometown flavor of his own experiences. “I wanted to take something from the people who’ve inspired me,” he says, “but also put myself in there, and just make something I could be proud of. It’s definitely a moody record, there’s definitely going to be some heartbreak in there, definitely going to be some dark times. But there’s music you listen to when you’re feeling good, and music you listen to when you’re down and out, and I think this is a record that satisfies both needs.”
