One Republic coming to Horseshoe

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on January 18, 2011

*OneRepublic is a self-proclaimed “genreless” band from Colorado. Formed in 2002 by Ryan Tedder and Zach Filkins, the band achieved success on MySpace, becoming the most prominent un-signed act on the website. They signed onto Mosley Music Group in 2006, and released their debut album, Dreaming Out Loud in 2007. OneRepublic made radio history when with their first single, “Apologize” received the largest amount of airplay in history with 10,331 plays in one week, the record only being broken again by Bleeding Love, a song Tedder also wrote himself. The remix version, featured on Timbaland’s album Shock Value was a massive hit internationally, reaching number-one in sixteen countries and gaining 10 million downloads (the largest number of digital downloads for any song to date) subsequently earning them a Grammy nod.  The band also achieved national success with their second single, “Stop and Stare”. Dreaming Out Loud was certified gold in the United States, Austria, Australia and Canada. This one time performance will be held on March 10th, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in the Showroom

Mountain Jam Lineup announced

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on January 12, 2011

MOUNTAIN JAM RETURNS TO HUNTER MOUNTAIN, NY JUNE 2-5, 2011

GOV’T MULE, MY MORNING JACKET AND THE WARREN HAYNES BAND TO HEADLINE

FESTIVAL ADDS FOURTH NIGHT OF MUSIC AND CAMPING

(January 11, 2011, Woodstock, NY) – Radio Woodstock and acclaimed guitarist Warren Haynes (Gov’t Mule, The Allman Brothers Band) present the seventh annual Mountain Jam Music Festival (MountainJam.com) at Hunter Mountain, in Hunter, NY from Thursday, June 2, to Sunday, June 5, 2011. For the first time, Mountain Jam will expand to include four days of music and camping. Early bird tickets are now available at MountainJam.com.

Gov’t Mule will headline Mountain Jam for the seventh consecutive year on Saturday, June 4. Gov’t Mule’s two-set performance at Mountain Jam VII will be one of only a few select appearances for the group in 2011. Modern rock heroes My Morning Jacket will return to the festival after five years to headline on Sunday, June 5. The newly formed Warren Haynes Band, a soul-infused ensemble will make its debut northeast festival appearance, headlining on Friday, June 3.

“It’s been great to watch Mountain Jam grow over the last seven years from a one-day concert to a multi-day, destination event,” says Haynes. “I’m really looking forward to this year’s line-up and to performing with both Gov’t Mule and the Warren Haynes Band.”

Mountain Jam favorites Michael Franti & Spearhead, hot off the smashing success of their latest hit album The Sound of Sunshine, will return for their sixth consecutive Mountain Jam appearance. The festival’s eclectic lineup will also see return appearances by crossover punk-Americana sensations The Avett Brothers, and modern blues-rock trailblazers North Mississippi Allstars.

A diverse array of first-time Mountain Jam performers will also join in, such as high-energy, hippie folk-pop collective Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, cross-genre banjo wiz Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, legendary blues-rock masters Electric Hot Tuna, rhythm & blues and gospel icon Mavis Staples, high-energy psychedelic rockers Portugal. The Man, West African-influenced Asheville, NC improvisers Toubab Krewe, and Dave Matthews’ collaborator and guitar virtuoso Tim Reynolds & TR3, among others.

Each night Mountain Jam will present additional late night entertainment both outside and inside Hunter Mountain’s Colonel’s Hall. The late night sets include the return of the hot, electronic jamband Lotus, the Canadian dance trio The New Deal and the recently formed supergroup, 7 Walkers featuring Bill Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead), George Porter Jr. (The Meters), Papa Mali, and Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson).

For the first time, Mountain Jam will also provide music for early arrivals on the night of Thursday, June 2nd starting at 8pm. Funk/soul trio Soulive, will headline Thursday night’s offerings with a set of instrumental Beatles songs from their latest album Rubber Soulive. Rising Brooklyn-based soul-rockers The London Souls, and a late-night band still to be announced will round out Thursday’s entertainment.

“We are really excited to bring this amazing group of artists to the Mountain in 2011 and to expand the fun to a fourth night”, said Mountain Jam Founder, and Radio Woodstock President/Owner, Gary Chetkof. “Every year we strive to make the Mountain Jam experience better than the year before, and this year we know we are going to take this over the top!”

The festival’s forward-thinking Awareness Village will once again host a special acoustic stage, as well as exhibits from not-for-profit organizations and environmental groups, children’s entertainment, performance and sculpture art, physical and spiritual healing, a beer and wine garden, and much more. The Festival will also be continuing its greening efforts with recycling, carbon offsets, and free water refills to reduce the usage of plastic water bottles.

Originally conceived in 2005 as a single-day celebration of Radio Woodstock’s 25th anniversary, Mountain Jam has blossomed into a four-day, multi-stage event, featuring onsite camping, and one of the northeast’s most pristine natural amphitheaters. Over the years, Mountain Jam has hosted some of the top names in live music, including The Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh & Friends, Bob Weir & RatDog, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Ray LaMontagne, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band, Yonder Mountain String Band, Les Claypool, Dave Mason, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, The Hold Steady, Coheed & Cambria, Drive-By Truckers, Dr. Dog, Medeski Martin & Wood, Mike Gordon, G. Love & Special Sauce, Ozomatli, Galactic, Umphrey’s McGee and Robert Randolph & The Family Band, among many others. Last year, the festival presented Levon Helm’s 70th Birthday Jubilee with very special guests Warren Haynes, Donald Fagen, Ray LaMontagne, Sam Bush, Steve Earle, Patterson & David Hood, Jackie Greene and Allison Moorer.

The Hunter Mountain Lodge will provide fans with 24-hour access to both food and indoor bathrooms, while onsite camping and a variety of nearby hotels, lodges and ski chalets will ensure that all attendees have a wide variety of accommodations. This year Mountain Jam will also offer expanded VIP options, and will bring back its highly acclaimed “Tavern in the Woods” featuring private bar area and Hammock Grove, as well as a shaded hospitality tents, early arrival access at no additional charge, private camping areas, and a variety of gourmet food and beverages. Mountain Jam will also offer options for VIP on-site lodging and a VIP RV area on the Mountain.

Following the sellout of Mountain Jam’s Holiday Presale tickets, Festival Passes are now available at Early Bird prices for $142.50, and with camping for $172.50. For an additional $25, attendees can enjoy early admission to the campgrounds on Thursday afternoon and music on the Mountain starting at 8 pm. A limited number of VIP Festival Passes are now on sale for $414.50 which includes Thursday admission.

Hunter Mountain is located within a short drive from anywhere in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

Horseshoe Welcomes Aaron Lewis of Staind

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on January 12, 2011

At the heart of Staind’s loud, angst-laden music are the confessional lyrics and introspective personality of frontman Aaron Lewis. While other post-grunge bands were able to successfully mine the dark caverns once explored by Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, Lewis allowed his sensitivity to pour freely from his words and often pensive vocals, enabling Staind to strike a balance between heavy metal bombast and thoughtful, melodic rock. Born in Springfield, VT, Lewis listened to folk music as a child. The son of divorced parents, Lewis chronicled the emotional turmoil in his childhood with Staind, namely on tracks like “Epiphany” and “For You,” from Break the Cycle. Like the late Kurt Cobain from Nirvana, Lewis casts an unpretentious, no-frills image, exhibiting a brooding disposition and emotional vulnerability that troubled youths can relate to. Lewis recorded his first album with Staind, Tormented, in 1996. Don’t miss your chance to see Aaron Lewis in action!  This one time performance will be held on April 14th at 7:30 p.m. in the Showroom.  Tickets go on sale Friday January 14th, 2011 and may be purchased through Ticketmaster or the Horseshoe Box office

2010 – A Great Year for Music

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on December 29, 2010

The best concert festival of 2010

2010 was an exceptional year for live shows. It may have been due to the loss of album revenues to ITunes and digital trading or the weak economy that drove many of musical legends to tour the country this year. Or maybe it was age and the strong younger acts that scared many Hall of Fame Acts to cash in while they can.

Whatever the reason, it was an incredible year for the Midwest and especially the Louisville area.  With two major Festivals, (Forecastle and HullabaLou) and the opening of The Yum Center music lovers pockets were stretched to the limits by big name acts and legends.

In my 35 plus years of attending concerts, my first was Three Dog Night in 1973, there has never been as many great shows in Louisville and surrounding cities in one year.

I pulled only three photos from each band I was lucky enough to shoot this year and ended up with 565 shots in my folder.

I had a wonderful time this year and got the honor of covering many of my all time favorite bands. I still have a wish list but really narrowed it down in 2010.

So here is my favorite 2010 music, Festivals and performances. Please understand my personal choices don’t include Rap, Country, or Pop music. You can go to Spin, Rolling Stone, or Paste for a broader list of top CD’s. NPR has a nice report on the concert industry for 2010. go to  How The Disastrous 2010 Concert Season Could Work In Your Favor

Ear-X tacy Extravaganza

Posted in Entertainment by sceneandheardblog on December 28, 2010

I waited for this show before putting the final touches on my best of 2010. It was the correct decision. The benefit to save  ear X- tacy, the landmark local record store, sold out Headliners Music Hall and brought many of Louisville’s top musicians out pleading with the audience to keep our city from becoming a box cutter town full of out of town chain businesses.

Jim James, of My Morning Jacket thanked the audience for supporting the show stating, “ We travel a lot on tour and every city seems the same. Local businesses like ear X tacy make our city real. This is the place we go to discuss our music, and share our stories. We have all grow up spending our youth shopping and learning about new music there”.

The employees of the store, with the help of Production Simple organized the benefit, contacting the musicians and venue. It was all done without the knowledge of store owner, John Timmons who remarked,” I wouldn’t have asked for this. It’s the best Christmas present I have ever received,”

Scott Carney of Wax Fang began the show with a beautiful acoustic four song set, displaying his wonderful voice. Carneys’s voice sometimes goes unnoticed in the heavier sounds of his band. This set allowed you to understand how talented he is.

The Watson Twins followed with a soulful set that featured MMJ’s Patrick Hallahan on drums.

When Ben Sollee walked out with his cello the excitement continued to grow. The talented local favorite played his unique style of music brilliantly and was joined by Jim James for two inspiring numbers to end the set.

Cabin led by Noah Hewitt-Ball whose angelic vocals and range along with his bandmates came out specifically for this show.  “ We weren’t planning on playing for a while but when I got this call, I said count us in”.

By the time Jim James and Patrick Hallahan took the stage the show was into it’s third hour. The audience was primed and ready for the pair of My Morning Jacket members to put an exclamation mark on a legendary show.

As the pair began with a grunge version of “Ill be Home for Christmas” it was clear that these guys were up to the challenge of finishing the show with a bang. With James  playing bass, acoustic guitar and mixing sound from his distortion box, while Hallahan furnished his usual powerful drumming as backing they played many fascinating versions of My Morning Jacket’s most popular songs.

The genius of Jim James is evident. He continues to  rearrange his songs in a way only he can conceive, It is always enjoyable and amazing to see him in different elements from his band. The music and energy takes off when James hits the stage, he is controlled by it. They finished the set with “One Big Holiday” which included the normal guitar solo played on the bass and thanked ear X tacy for giving them the opportunity to find music and friends while growing up. “Thank you for supporting the store now go tell your friends to buy there too!”

John Timmonds stood by the exit thanking everyone for their  continued support through the years. Let’s hope this show was recorded as part of this benefit. It was a night worth reliving.
